Question DC Info, please

I'm taking my honey bunny to DC this January. She's never been there. We are old f***s and she has a new titanium or something hip. Anyone who has suggestions on a moderately priced central hotel where my SCAR-GO LY/B MCS will be safe, off-beat touristy things to do, etc. will be blessed with good thoughts from the North.
My only planned stops are the Smithsonian (2 days) and the Grant Memorial (an ancestor was the sculptor). Thanks

You may want to check rates at the Loew's L'Enfant Plaza. They are centrally located to the mall and major road in/out of DC. The hotel is nice enough - modern. Very close to the Smithsonian and there is a Metro station under the hotel for access to the rest of the DC area without going aboveground or taking the MCS.

The Spy Museum is a very "happening" museum right now. Get tickets in advance. If you are coming in January and like aviation, the Smithsonian will have their new annex at Dulles Airport open by then. They are running a shuttle bus from the Air and Space Museum out there or you could drive. It opens mid-December.

keep in mind those places are on the metro, so you can stay 15 miles outside the city and just grab a train to get into the city. granted it will be a 30-40 minute ride in, but you'll save some money on the hotel.

of course there are some nice hotels downtown
