| MINI2 Regular | SCCA Questions Howdy, I was wondering if their was anyone on here that was in the SCCA, and could point me to a website with registration info on how to join. Also if they knew of any club/events that take place around Culpeper VA (Near the mountains). The only one I know of is the one near DC, and that is a good 2 - 3 hour drive from where I'm at depending on traffic. I did find out that they do RoadRally stuff about 20 miles away in Orange and kind of interested in doing that. Or if they know anything about Pro Rallying and how hard/easy that is to get into for a novice? Thanks, Owen |

Offline | The scca has an extensive website at scca.org. There will be a link there to your local and/or regional contact. If you can't find the info you need there, send me a PM and I'll get you pointed in the right direction. Tom 02 EB/B MCS |

Offline | Owen, Just took a quick look at the map and the DC SCCA group is the closest in the SCCA world. The next closest is the Blue Ridge Region. Here is a good source for different autocross venues on the East Coast. Yet another link. | MINI2 Regular | Ya I've been reading those sites and things but maybe its just me but I'm a tad confused about how to go about signing up. I did notice that they do RallyCross(Orange about 20 minutes away), and looked like they did ProRally near where I live (not sure where exactly) So I was wondering if anyone was familiar with those too? I guess though that it will be autocross for me, not wanting to take my car on a gravel track (rallycross) and not sure if I'm good enough for ProRally. Thanks for the help though ![]() |

Offline | http://solo.wdcr-scca.org/articles/novice1.php D, Check the info at the above link, I think that article will answer most of your questions. The DC club has a great website. The best advice there is to be sure and attend at least one event before you participate, ask lots of questions and you should be ready to give it a try. Tom 02 EB/B MCS |

Offline | The above is great advice that is pretty much how I got hooked. I took the first two novice classes from Brian Garfield. These classes are the best way to find out what autoX is all about. THis schedule just came out for the various autocross groups in the DC area. At the bottom of the page are the links to more autocross groups. Good Luck...... | MINI2 Regular | Sweet thanks guys, I found this the other day but managed to find the link for the Level 1 classes. I think I'll probably sign up for one of those once the schedule has been posted. I was wondering if I do go into this, how much damage/wear and tear does it put onto the car? I'll be using my cooper that I use to drive every day back and forth to work. I kind of figured that these events are infrequent so they wouldn't cause that much wear. Also what about insurance do you have any of that on the cars you drive? or do you just risk it? |

Offline | My auto-x car is my daily driver. The only real wear will be tires. Particularly if you do a class. That's really the only issue. Just plain bone stock you'll have a load of fun. A second set of tires/wheels is nice. You might pick up some used X-Lites or other lighter wheels cheap. Then add some tires. |

Offline | Can't comment on the 712's or MX's, as I have the Azenis's and love them. If you are going to run pure stock and have a little extra cash that is burning a whole in your pocket, you might also consider running Hoosier "R" compound tires. They won't last very long, but they very, very sticky and probably offer you the biggest advantage, other than a series of autocross driving classes. Which ever path you take, follow obehave advice about another set of rims. If you decide to run in H stock, make sure that the rims you purchase are legal for the class. Offline | Yea what paddy said. If you can get track only tires, step up to the Azenis. If you want all in one the try the Kumhos. Put mine on and drive to the track about 35 miles away. Pretty decent even in the rain. The NZO Monzas are specifically for keeping you in stock class. There may be others. |

Offline | Still the best thing is an autocross class or two. Also look into the Evolution Autocross driving classes. Probably a little more expensive than the local Solo II class, but much more intense. The next thing would be stock size rims with Hoosier's on them. This might give you as much 1 second lower time. This would be for the serious ones, as the tires run as much as $180 a copy and would last at the most one race season.
