Blackbeard's Bounty/ OBX Run 09/11/2005 - Now with lots of Pictures!

I'm planning a run along the Outer Banks of NC, and at the heighth of hurricane season too!

Sunday, Sept 11, meet in Nags Head, location and directions posted below. From there, we'll motor down the coast, then take the ferry to Ocracoke Island, last residence of Blackbeard the Pirate. Along the way, we'll stop in at the Pirate Shop, for some interesting trinkets.

Anyone interested?

Here's a link for hotels in the area: OBX Hotels

If you prefer to stay on Ocracoke Island, here's the info link which includes lodging:
Ocracoke Village

The places on Ocracoke allow cancellation within 72 hours, so plenty of warning if we get CANX by a hurricane.

Meet at Sonic Burger Drive In at 10AM, this is the only one located on OBX. It's on the main street in Nags Head NC:

i've been out there with someone I loved at the time. So crappily she treated me, yet i'll still consider a trip to those lovely lands of her summer house. A severely overdeveloped beachland - with wild horses not too far away.

John, you would consider making the trip south again?

Fuzzy and I are planning on going down for the weekend, and doing some beach driving on the beach on Saturday. I'll get and post some motel/campground info in a bit. We're going to drive the bus down and camp.

Unfortunately, the island has been 'discovered'. It's been named as having some of the best beaches in the county as well as being marketed as a place to 'get away'. The end result is that it's no longer relatively empty in September. Of course this depends upon the weather. We had to evacuate a few years back as there was a hurricane heading that was (it missed Ocracoke). A couple of times we've arrived a day or so after the place had been evacuated due to hurricanes roaming about in the area. Those times the place really was empty - reminded us of the place when we first went there in the late '70s. Of course within a few days the place was filling up again.

If you haven't been in years you'll be surprised to see the place. It's still the same, but very different as well. The national seashore limits development to the area of the actual town of Ocracoke, and there's been lots of development. As far as I can tell, Howard street is the only remaining unpaved street.

We've had 4wd vehicles for years. When we first started going here you could drive out to the beach at South Point and it was like the end of the world. Totally alone on a pristine beach. Now every yahoo has an SUV and while the beach is still the same, the place can get pretty crowded. The teeming masses do leave by the late afternoon so it's still possible to be able to appreciate the area.

It's still a wonderful place though. Even at the height of the season, the day tourists go back to Hatteras in the evening and aside from a couple of places 'downtown' the island is very tranquil at night.

We're interested in this gathering, but it's a long haul from Rochester, NY to get there. This also depends upon my wife's being able to change her vacation time. Probably no MINI as we'd bring a 4wd to be able to get to the beaches we like.

I hope we can make it.

We're going to try! Usually rent a house for a week when we go out there so I need to start exploring that as well.

Would you and the wife be interested in doing some beach Jeepin' on Saturday? We're going to drive down Friday night in the bus.

And this is for any of you, if you want to do some beach driving on Saturday.

Here's some pictures of the bus, it's a 25 year old Bluebird Wanderlodge that Fuzzy is restoring. These pics were from the day after we bought it.

If we go we'll have a 4wd so we can get out to South Point and North Point so a beach drive sounds like fun. The only place we've ever encountered a problem is the portion of the beach accessed at the ramp just beyond Pony Beach. The sand there is so deep and loose that the car had trouble, but we didn't get stuck. Right now we have a Ford Escape which is surprisingly good in the sand.

I just spoke with the other half and she's interested. The downside is The Drive. Direct to Ocracoke from where we are (Rochester, NY area) is a 15 to 18 hr drive, depending upon traffic.
