Mini's rational . . . say it isn't so .

Really. If you don't got one, you need one, and it's not worth the wait

How about this Aurel, get the absolute best trade in possible, order your Clubman and then pile on the miles on that current car before you take delivery.

MPG money saved + taxes saved due to trade in + irrational exuberance = MINI Clubman

But then again, you can probably multiply the MPG money saved exponentially by next year and maybe your trade in will be the same?

OK, Aurel, factor that in to your financial equations!

Just a note no aircon being used so you would have to take off about 15% to cover it.
I only have the manual aircon thing and have not used it yet heated seats are in all the time though.

As to that "no aircon" Shaun- gee, I'm glad global warming hasn't come to England yet to turn winter into a hot and humid season!! But interestingly or coincidentally, I was discussing mpgs with a service adviser up at my MINI dealership during the Clubman Debut...and he said that using the air-co in the summer on the highway would actually increase the mpgs due to not having the drag effect of open windows. To me, it's probably negligible but it's something to talk about.

The MINI obsession is quite something isn't it? I wonder if there is a MINIs Anonymous around?

Yes I would agree with that as the 15% figure I put was off a t v show years ago that said aircon adds to the mpg but its about the same as having the windows open at 50mph.

United-Kingdom MPG slowly increasing...

When I picked up my new Clubman it had only 8 miles on the clock, and was showing 31mpg. From then on it slowly crept up, careful running-in type driving so far,
now over a month later with 600 miles on the clock it is showing 42mpg.(Imperial)

Mostly winding country lane-type motoring, no motorway or city use yet.

What can I expect in the longer term?

In the first fuel tank of my Clubman Cooper S Auto it said over the entire tank I did 43MPG (90%motorway and 10% City)

The 2nd tankfull is 100%City and its showing me 19.8MPG over almst all of the second tankfull. Ok Geneva city centre is ram packed with long traffic lights and in my automatic i dont have Stop/Starrt but its still muh more than i thought,

Ofcourse consumption is supposed to improve after the first few tankfulls but for thr city consumption I doubt i;m going to get better than 25MPG the way things are looking,

According to my Clubman pdf it's approximately 13.2 US gallons/50 litres.

Aurel do you have or would you like a pdf version of the Clubman's manual?

One thing I was thinking about... what spec of car was used by BMW for the MPG tests. I guess they used a basic Mini Clubman with 15" rims, no air-con or anything else that robs it of weight, like a panoramic roof? I always thought that roof was like carrying around a second person all the time. It always felt that way in my R53 Mini's.

I've noticed that since I swapped the wheels on my Clubman from 16-17" the overall average MPG has dropped from 39.3 down to 39.0, no change in the way I drive, I guess the change in tyres is enough to make an impact on MPG?

That average mpg was over the first 2500 miles, including speeds in excess of the posted limits, and driving through a blizzard as I crossed the Rocky Mtns. Some city driving, but it was mostly highway.

Just finished my drive home. Approx 180 miles. First 10 miles were around town, shopping, getting lunch, stop and go traffic, etc.. Got my average milage all the way up to 40.0 MPG when I got off the freeway getting home. Most of the freeway was driven at between 70MPH to 75MPH. Looking forward to my next long trip to see what I might get.

Interesting part was seeing temp 70, speed 70, milage 70, and trip 70, all at the same time. I should have taken a picture.

Sold the Cooper. Now driving the Traveller. I mean Clubman.

I'm considering moving from a Bug to a Mini (likely a Clubman). Interested to watch this thread to see what the real world difference is in mileage between a standard Clubman and an S.

On my daily commute I am getting 42+ MPG (this morning it was 42.6 to be precise). I have a 52mile commute each way every day and it's 95% highway (there might be 2-3 miles of the 52 that are non-highway). I set the cruise @ 65 MPH in 6th gear.

One side note - when I started the commute last summer, with my previous car (a 10 year old 6 cyl automatic) I did a little experiment in real world MPG. The EPA says (fueleconomy.gov) that the car should get 24 on the highway. I drove the car for a few months, taking careful notes of each trip duration and my gas receipts (I had always kept a record of fillups anyway). The only thing I varied was highway speed using the cruise control. Driving at 70mph on the highway would get me about 25 mpg. Driving at 65mph would boost the economy up to 28 mpg! That, and it only took a few more minutes at the lower speed. I also found out that even small amounts of stop&go, in-town driving REALLY socked my MPG - I could drive all week to/from work, then take a trip to my in-law's -about 8 miles away (15 minutes) and my mpg would sink from 28 to 23/24. So, just by laying off the throttle a bit from 70 to 65mph I was able to increase my mpg by 11%! To put that in perspective, at 600 miles a week and nearly 30k/yr (for me) - if gas is 3.75 then 25mpg is 15 cents per mile while 28 mpg is 13.4 (rounded). Over a year that 1.6 cents per mile translates into $480!

One of the reasons I bought a cooper was the MPG, and that also contributed to my decision to get it in stick as well. The sticker says 37mpg, my dealer said real-world was more like 40, but I knew I could do better

While most people complain about the cost of gas, I don't think they *really* comprehend how much their driving habits have an impact on their fuel consumption.
