Offline | Newbie question... Hi forum, After test driving a couple of cars, (Volvo C30 - lovely exterior, dour interior, BMW 1 - dated and over priced) we arrived a the Mini showroom and within one opening of the doors, my wife decided that we weren't leaving the showroom without a Clubman. We don't like big cars, so if you are looking for a small, quality car with character it's really difficult to find something. Coming from a small two seat cabrio the Clubman seems enormous! Anyhoo, we bought an ex-demo test drive dark silver/silver roof, thoroughly over specced with everything (apart from bluetooth) and 5k miles on the clock for effectively £4k under list. There was no haggling at all allowed but a good part-ex. We are absolutely delighted with it. It raises a smile wherever we go and so much interest at a standstill we think we may as well be in a Ferrari - I even had a homeless guy wanting to see the doors do their thing again! So to my question, we're delighted with everything apart from the speakers. It's the upgraded system but the paper cone speakers are just poor and unable to reproduce any bass at all especially at motorway speeds. Without trecking up to Merseyside for a full 'install' at this newmini place, does anyone know of a manufacturer who makes 3-way componant speakers I can slip in at home? Thanks for any advice Happy Clubbing Ben |

Offline | Hi Ben; and welcome to the "Club"! ![]() If that's really the case and not an exaggeration then I'd check two things before going aftermarket for speakers: 1: That the bass setting hasn't been turned right down by a previous driver because the HI-Fi sound system is fine in mine - but I'm not into hard rock and pounding bass. 2: That the speakers haven't been blown by a previous driver who tried full bass at full volume "to see what it sounded like", which your dealer will replace under warranty. Offline | I find the rears do lack a bit of oomph I have the standard system and agree theres not enough bass from the back. Its not a terrible setup just a bit to bright in my opinion. Welcome to Mini2 and Mini Clubmans. |

Offline | Thanks for the answers guys. A bit of confusion, the speakers DO produce bass, but not without distorting. I'm not into banging house music and bleeding ears, maybe a bit of Radiohead etc, but they can distort at what I would assume to be 4/10 volume. I have contacted newministuff about a Clubman kit, but they haven't got back to me. It would be a 500 mile round trip to fix some new speakers. I'm thinking I could probably do that myself, If only I could find a manufacturer who does 3 way componant speakers! No ideas? Thanks BenC |

Offline | But I think Ben's got the HI-Fi upgrade so I wonder if he's reviewed his settings? (+1 on the bass and +1 or +2 on the fader with the rest at zero ain't bad in a Clubman, unless the speakers are blown of course, if not up to the standards that only £££ can buy!) Ben Sorry if that seems to be talking across you - didn't mean it that way! David Last edited by dlpruk : Apr 13th, 2008 at 05:45 PM. Reason: Added note to Ben |

Offline | Sorry, I don't have a name for a supplier of speakers either. I also got the hifi speakers and they are fine at low volume. It depends what you compare with. In my prevous car I had a 12" subwoofer with a very large amplifier, and of course the Mini is nothing compared to that. But I think it is a problem with the small physical size of the speakers, small amp, and not least the mounting in plastic parts of the door with little damping, not just the type of speaker, or cone material. What I really wanted to say was that as soon as you change the fader setting you loose power. The front/rear speakers are well balanced. Leave everything neutral for some time and then see if you need to change it. Any ideas on where to fit a sub? |
