Speed / RPM Q

Well this is my first MINI - I've only driven it a bit as it's been in the detail shop for a clear bra but anyway...

I've noticed that when cruising around 65MPH the tach is near 3k RPM in 6th gear. This is the first manual I've had (although I learned on a stick, both of my previous cars were autos), so maybe I'm skewed by the fact that both my autos were doing 65MPH with the tach at 2.2k RPM (presumably in the highest gear, which should be at most 5th).

So I'm wondering if this is OK - e.g. is it normal that the MINI engine rev higher than other cars? BTW this is a non-S version.

TIA

MPH = R * 60 * 3.14159 * (W * P / 100 * 2 / 25.4 + D) / 12 / 5280 / G
R = RPM of engine
W = Width of tire
P = Profile (aspect ratio) of tire
D = Diameter of wheel
G = Gear Ratio
Cooper Clubman 6th Gear = 0.683 * 4.353 = 2.973
RPM at 65 MPH based on tire size:
2710 for 175/65-15
2660 for 195/55-16
2680 for 205/45-17
2660 for 205/40-18

Thanks for the reply! Lemme see.... they're 16" tires so I assume that's the 55-16

I'm not exactly sure of the RPM but its close to 3k. I'll check it tomorrow with my scangauge (does the mini OBC give digital tach readouts somewhere?)

What kind of engine was in your previous cars? Larger engines will generally do less revs at highway speeds.

Well they were both V6's - somewhere in the 3.0L range. This is my first experience with a smaller car so I honestly don't know what's "normal".

On my way into work I noticed the tach was just above 2500 so your numbers make sense!

Thanks again!
