It seems every time I park the car, a few minutes later a very loud fan comes on (presumably a cooling fan) for a couple minutes then shuts off. I only mention it because it is particularly loud (nothing unusual in the noise.... just a loud fan). Is this normal?

I might just be paranoid.... I know my wife's Ford has fans that come on after the car is off. The MINI usually does it after longer trips, and I can only hear the fan after I've parked and turned off the vehicle.

If you've been driving for a long time and it's under "certain" circumstances it may well be normal. I have only had this happen a handful of times - in my '06. It was not something that happened all the time, but only if I'd been pushing my car or it was hot outside.

What does "longer trips" mean to you?

For example it comes on when I drive from work to home.... 55 miles or about 1 hour cruising @ 65mph in 6th.

it also came on after I rode to my in-law's house which is 15 mins away.

It wasn't hot outside... low 70's perhaps.

It only comes on for a minute or 2.

I've got to call my dealer tomorrow for something else so I'll ask him about it then.

Yes, ask him...that seems excessive to me..maybe not the 55 miles but I can't really say that because I've driven many more than that - in my '04 and '06 - and not had the fan go on... Perhaps this is something endemic to the newer MINIs? Mine have also been automatics...CVTs and now the newer auto.

I bet you could do a search on the 2nd Generation forum and find some salient info.

Had a few hotter days here and the fan comes on after shut down, loud yes but certainly not out of the ordinary. There's no cooling air coming into the car once you stop and all that heat is just sitting there the fans bound to come on. I wouldn't worry about it at all.

I have had the same, but only once (during last week's heatwave). After getting out of the car, a minute or two later the loud fan noise came on for a few minutes. Since the British weather is normally cool it hasn't happened before.

I wasn't worried as I had the same thing before on a previous car (not a MINI).
