I just read an article in Autoweek about this car. Apparently the designer made the following comments (as I can remember them) about the Ford Flex. They wanted to have something new so they made incorporated the following changes.

The wanted a new sillouete, something different. But it sure looks like a big Clubman to me.
They wanted a different color look, so they decided to make the two-tone with the blacked out pillars. Sounds like a Mini to me.

So the first two items they talk about in designing the car are almost direct copies of a Mini. And then they make it sound like they are doing something new and different.
