United-States Mini Clubman "Surging"

I had a problem with this before and was told it was the floor pad covering the accelerator. I accepted this, yet I've never been fully convinced. The problem only happens rarely--every two years, and yet when it occurs, I'm shaken up. I'm putting this out here in case anyone is familiar with the situation.

Today I was driving my '08 Clubman in traffic. Prior to that it had been sitting in the parking lot for about 4 hours. After creeping through city traffic, I approached the road leading onto the highway. As I approached, I noticed the car beginning to accelerate. I drove for 10 feet and by now it was "surging" and I quickly put my foot on the brake and was about to shift (automatic) into park when I noticed there were no cars coming so I went ahead. The car kind of lurched into traffic, leaving me shaken up. As I said, this happened two years ago also while driving in traffic. Instead of inching along, it begins to surge. I have one of the first Clubmans and wonder if there's some glitch involved. Not being at all mechanical or technical, I can only describe what I experience. Needless to say, it gets my attention. Hope someone can help. Sharon C.

Is your car turbocharged (i.e. is it an "S" version)? Can you hear any associated engine noise, for example a "thrumming" or "chirping" noise?

Turbo surge occurs when the post compressor side air pressure becomes higher than the actual compressor can generate. This causes the airflow in the compressor turbine to block up and stall. The net effect is a severe pressure drop which allows air flow to temporarily resume before it stalls again. If the surging is severe, this can destroy the thrust bearing of the turbo. Surge will feel like anything from a slight loss of power to a violent jerking when driving.

If it's not a turbocharged engine, have you had the high pressure fuel pump (HPFP) inspected?

Not sure about MINI diesels, but I know on some diesel engines they are fitted with stall prevention, if youre driving slowly in too high a gear the system thinks its labouring and about to stall so will speed up the engine to cater for it, this gives the impression under the right circumstances thats its trying to accelerate away on its own? Its not, its just trying to stop you stalling it.
My Freelander 2 has stall prevention and sometimes does this.
