08 Clubman S fuel consumption rising over time

Hi there everyone,

I read various threads about fuel consumption with our beloved MINIs and I wanted to share my observations.

When I bought my '08 Clubman S, I would almost get 39 MPG and since then fuel consumption has been increasing gradually. It seemed like it had stabilized after a year to around 34 MPG but over the past 12 months it has dropped to around 30 MPG (8L/100 kms).

I am located in Canada and these readings are taken from the trip computer's average fuel consumption calculations.

I almost always use Shell Ultra which is what's recommended around here. They claim it has no ethanol and it's supposed to help keep the engine cleaner. Always did my recommended service at the local MINI dealer religiously but I am looking for alternatives now that I'm out of warranty.

I should add I recently I had 2 instances of the engine throwing a CEL followed by "limp mode" for a couple of minutes but scans from an aftermarket code reader have been inconclusive (no codes saved). Not sure if MINI has a special code reader but I can't get a reading and other than these 2 recent events the car's been behaving normally with no other issues.

I am planning to replace the spark plugs and air filter myself but I wonder what else I could do to restore fuel consumption to something closer to 34 MPG.

Dealer suggested I take the car in for a "carbon cleaning" this past spring but it's an expensive proposition and I'm not sold on the idea this will make a big difference.

Car has about 80,000 kms (almost 61000 miles).

I would be interested in hearing about other Coupe/Clubman S owners out there so I can compare with their experience and perhaps find a solution.

Cheers,

M

MINI do have a behind the scenes reader, so to speak, that can access codes the normal readers cant.
You can get something similar but they are around the 400 quid mark.
