Shifting Gears - HELP

I just purchased a 2009 Clubman with a manual transmission. I have never driven manual until a one hour lesson last week! I learned on a Ford something-or-other and I will tell you there is a HUGE difference. Mini's are tighter and there is far less wiggle room. I have the hang of everything except I am not happy with my shifting. It sounds too aggressive. I find that I need to be in 2nd almost immediately (around 30km/hr) and then 3rd only keeps my car happy until about 50-60km/hour and I need to shift to 4th. I was on the highway doing 110 km/hr in 4th but would absolutely need to go up to 5th to do my usual 125-130 km/hr.

So, I guess my question has 2 parts - what RPM ranges should I be looking at for gear changes and how do you make them SMOOTH?

I would also like to add, my car came with a french manual which is less than zero help to me - which is why i'm asking this here.

Thanks!

Some MINI rev counters do have the ideal gear number illuminate when you should change gear for the best performance and economy, maybe yours needs setting up?

Smoothness comes with practice, perhaps you should go out with someone who already drives a manual change and let them give you a few tips and a demonstration??

I thought you were going to say your car came with a French Maid because that would be ideal

On line copies of the manuals can be found here:
