United-Kingdom Engine misfire on acceleration

Hi, I've been having an intermittant issue where my cooper s clubman seems to misfire under heavy acceleration. It can happen when moving up the gears or when in 6th and you accelerate (for example, on the motorway)

There appears to be a misfire and a load of smoke blows from the exhaust. It then clears and is ok.

A little embarresing when trying to pull away from a tail-gater

Has anyone else had / aware of this issue ?

Is it something silly like a bad coil pack or the dreaded timing chain tensioner

Any advice is greatly appriciated

1st thing I'd try is simply changing the spark plugs, this cured a similar issue on mine - & as they (only) cost around 20 -, even if its something else at fault like the ignition coil, the car will always benefit from new plugs
