Unhappy Do you have a self opening roof?

Just wanted to find out if anyone has had their roof open of it's own accord.

I got up on Monday morning, opened the curtains to find that the convertible roof had opened to where it stops for the sunroof feature, and the windows had opened.

Panicking I threw on some clothes and ran out to see what had happened, no I hadn't opened it by sleeping on my keys like others as it was still locked. Problem was it had been pouring with rain so looked like it had just taken a bath and some cheeky git had lent in as far as they could get and nicked stuff out the door pockets and the CD out the head unit Fortunately they obviously weren't a mini owner and hadn't worked out that they could have unlocked the car with a mere flick of a switch. Luckily I had locked the glove box!!!

Took it to my dealer yesterday, wet bum, soaking seats and told them what had happened, meanwhile brake lights were a law unto themselves and the runflat indicator light wouldn't go off
They gave me a Mini One Conv to run about in until they could sort it and called me today to say that it was a roof opening switch that was faulty and caused the roof to open on it's own and I'm getting MCC back tomorrow, hopefully all dried out

This is now the sixth time in 18 months MCCs been back into the 'fix it' shop and it's had:

New roof (x2)
Handbrake Cuff
Head Unit
Driver Seat Belt
Rear side windows
Trim replaced (containing rear brake light)
and now the roof switch.

Love my Mini , hate the problems

Hi MINIDAMON

There was a terrible rattling sound coming out of the seatbelt area, it had to be replaced to stop the rattle.

Sounds like the Christine effects of old. My '05 Cabrio has been fine so far but my '02 hard top at various times would lock itself and roll the windows up or unlock itself and roll them down. Like you at first I suspected the key was being pressed in my pocket but it was the car. Best get it sorted, likely some seals are gone and are letting corrosion occur which then makes it do strange things when wet.

Harry

mine has opened itself up in the rain and in the dry for that matter.

i now have a disklock on the wheel which looks rubbish but won't unlock itself if i sit on the key in the house! hopefully this may may it a little harder to pinch if it does unlock itself and puts the roof down.

i dont leave anything in the glovebox or in the car at all and garage it everynight. I don't have garaging at work though so I have to be carefull with the keys.

Funny how the roof opened without keys in ignition?

Why didn't the alarm go off when the thief lent in?

Waking up and finding your roof has been open in the rain.

Hope you get it sorted.

I'm not sure why the alarm didn't go off although I may have pressed the lock button on the key twice when I locked the car which disables the motion sensors but keeps the car locked.

Didn't ask MINI to pick up the tab for stolen stuff as it turns out it was only a couple of maps and a copy CD!

Got it back today and they confirmed it was the roof release switch that was faulty. They hadn't dried out the seats or the mats so still driving about with a damp bum and a smell of wet dogs, hopefully it'll dry out soon

i heard there were problems with the early ones with sunfoofs opening.

my 03 reg has sunfoof and if you press and hold the unlock button on the key the sunroof and windows will open.

whereas my parents 06 reg also has a sunroof but doesnt have this function.

apparently mini have had so many problems with this that they decided to remove the feature.

I have a Dec 04 build MCSC & have not had any of these problems, thank goodness
Also if the car is locked, via the door or the keyfob, you cannot open it from inside

Oh & I can put the top down via the key fob.

I too had the opening sunroof problems (Oct 2003 Build) during the night but fortunately it appears to have been a one off (he says touching lots of wood) and I put it down the button being held down in my pocket as I went into the house therefore activating the opening of the windows and sunroof. Fortunately no one took a liking to any of my Cd's (perhaps that says more about my taste in music than the area I live in).

Slightly OTT but I asked my dealer and his technician why my MINI didnt bleep, like my Series 3 Convertible when I locked it with the remote. I was told that for the past 2 years it was illegal to activate the bleep on new cars. Damn nuisance as I now have to visually check that the car is locked before walking away!

What was your problems with the Rear Side Windows, am thinking of nipping mine in as the window mechanism seems very juddery on the back. Am also having the extremely irritating rattling Driver Seat Belt Replaced.

Fortunately have never woken up to find my roof open but my roof leaks so...

You sound like your having about as much luck with your car as I am having with mine! Have been told by MINI UK though that mine is a 'rogue' MINI and that the problems that I have had are not reflected accross the whole MINI Convertible population, makes me feel so much better! LOL.

Joe

The rear windows needed replaced because of bad crescent shaped scratches made worse each time they went up and down. There were a few threads on the subject a while back.
