United-Kingdom Leaky Convertable

Hi

As anyone else out there had a problem with the roof seals on a convertable. I noticed water getting in through the bottom of the passenger door of my 54 cooper s convertable which pooled in the passenger foot well completely soaking the carpet.

I checked my self and thought that the water appeared to be tracking around the door pillar and then through the bottom of the door just under the speaker.

I took it to the dealer last week and they water tested the vehicle and said that it was the roof seals that need replacing which surprised me.They did not have the seals in stock so I am taking it back this Thursday to have the work done.

Is this problem familiar to any one else out there if so did replacing the seals cure the problem.

Hi littlenick!

Welcome to MINI2!

While MINIs have a few leak problems, I haven't heard of many on the convertible. I guess if the roof is not sealing near the outer edge, water may be running down inside the A pillar and then in the bottom of the door?

Hope the new seal fixes it

Jon

Hi Minicabrio

Thanks for your reply.Just to let you know and advise others who may be interested.Pick the mini up yesterday evening. They replaced the roof seals and said the problem is more or less sorted.However. They want the car back for a further two days due to the tension bars being to taut???? .They say that all the side windows should be replaced as where the bars are incorrect they have scratched all the side windows. They also want to replace the bottom passenger door seal as they say that is worn????. And completely remove all the carpets so they can be dried out thoroughly.

I must say I had a quick look this morning before work at the drivers side window and I can not really see any scratches, may be I need to get my eyes tested.

Anyway have booked the car in as they said it is all is a warranty repair. I was also told that this is not the first one they have had with this problem IE the tension bars being incorrect.

Any one else out there had the same problem. By the way have been told that the leak has all but stopped and when they replace the door seal it should be fine.

Found mine only leaked when i washed it and wasn't concentrating with the pressure washer around the windows. Soon learnt my lesson. Think its about time to try some auto glym. You guys seem to rate it.

Thanks for the reply.

Thought the dealer had sorted the leak by replacing the roof seals but with all the rain yesterday down here was disappointed to find that water had still got in still under the speaker in the passenger door. The car is booked in at the dealers in Tring Herts to have the windows replaced due to marking and they are due to replace to door seal Which I thought was the problem all along. Hopefully replacing the door seal will cure the leak,Will not be happy if it does not.

By The way what does that stuff you mentioned do ??

Halfords do it - it comes in a kit with the shampoo, protector and an applicator.

You'd be looking at £15-20 ish.

Anywhere that carries a good stock of car cleaning products really.

I think the leaky roof is quite a serious problem. Seeing we live in england!
I'd take a very tough stance with your dealer because its your car and your hard earned cash went into it. Maybe ask them to prove it does not leak when you pick it up next by spraying the areas with a hose whilst you and a tech sit in the car. Found with my dealer, HR Owen, they did not treat me seriously when my roof rattled so i made a scene. It worked. Think its like " whoever shouts loudest " scenario.

My first car got damp cos the dealer left the boot open and the radio on when they were trying to sell it and it rained. When i got it i had to air it for ages and it steamed up for about 4 months.

Hi Alex

there is no way that I will accept just one drop of water after Monday. I am pretty sure that the replacement of the door seal should sort it out as the water definitely is comming in under the speaker where the seal it not making a good contact possibly. A bit dissapointed they did not choose to do this on the first visit as I told them what i had noticed.

They also have to replace all the side windows which do show signs of scratching.ever had this problem? I have read post on this site of others that have. All work to be carried out under warranty. Whilst the car is there will also ask them to check the CAT as I was one of the unfortunates who filled the tank right up last Tuesday at Tescos in Aylesbury .Although done about 80 mile since and have not had any problems.Mixed in about a 1/3 of a tank of BP ultimate yesterday just in Case the fuel was dodgy to try to dilute it asap.

I will post back next Week to let you know how things go.

Thanks for your interest..

No sign of window scratching on mine but the driver side window needs adjusting because when the roof is down it flaps and bangs when i travel over rough surfaces.

Hi All

Just coming back with second attempt to stop the leak via the bottom of the passenger door. Seal was replaced and Was told that the problem was now fixed I assume that the dealer does a water test. 6 weeks on and bear in mind that we have just had a very dry spell not much rain at all here in South Bucks, everything seemed fine ..... But a few day ago we had a burst of heavy rain and lo and behold my wife said see thought she saw a trickle of water coming through the bottom of the passenger door. Upon checking when I got home it was difficult to tell but would say that a little water may have come through. Called the dealer who have booked the car in yet again to try to solve the problem.

In the mean time I was cleaning the car and just noticed that there was a difference between the the way the doors were sitting as regards being flush with the back panels. The
passenger door that was giving the problems seem to sit well inside the line whilst the drivers door I would say was just outside the line. I thought that a slight adjustment might cure the problem so I have adjusted the passenger door catch so that the door sits flush as I think it should do anyway.

We have not had any major rain since I did the adjustment although it did rain on sunday for a short while and Upon inspection it seems now that the water is sitting towards the outside edge as it should do..I think that the door sitting too tight may have encourage the water to run down the inside of a pinched seal that caused the water ingress.

I still need it to rain persistently to be sure but at this moment I think there is a good chance that I may have finally solved my leak problem.

fingers crossed.
