My April 2006 cabrio was had its roof up and down very many times this summer. No sign of the dreaded white marks.

Really? I initially had a bit of a barney with MINI about this - they originally suggested that the new car warranty did not cover "normal wear and tear" which is how they viewed the fabric abrasion. However, and thanks to the knowledge and support of MINI2, they were persuaded otherwise.....

roof wear

Today I took my 05 cooper convertible to the dealership I bought it from in September this year with a cherished warranty and asked them to look at the white marks. they were not impressed that I knew from this site that it was a common problem, however they agreed it needs a new cover & they will need the car for 2 days. So they only replace the fabric not the roof, Is it worth asking for blue instead of black & paying the extra if possible, is blue less prone to the white marks?
Your comments would be appreciated.

I have a feeling the blue fabric is worse than the black, not the other way round.......

How old is your car? I'm wondering how long they will continue to replace roofs that are worn.....

how old

Its a March 2005 cooper which I bought in September 2007 as a mini cherished vehicle so I presume it was covered by the mini cherished warranty.

We have just bought a 2yr old convertible with a blue roof and it has the white marks mentioned in this thread. I see from searching this board that a bulletin number of 5434906900 applies to this issue however that number comes from a US owner.

----------------------------- snip ---------------------

Replace conv top fabric and installed funnel inserts, rubber end.

Does the same bulletin number apply over here in the UK as well or is there a different one for over here?

2nd cabrio, 3rd top

Dont let the title confuse you. We had a wicked 05 cab S, jet black and after about 18 months the service manager, who's family, if you get my drift suggested we get a new top. It really was time the top layer had just about worn thru right above the rear windows, when the top was up. I think the top would last a lot longer with someone who drives with the top up on a more frequent basis. When the top is down it chafs like a fat pair of legs in levis. I myself used to weigh 320 and know the dynamics behind the chaffing on denim. same goes for BMW cloth. They've since switched my svce. mgr. back to BMW side.
They loosened the top when down but that doesnt really do much! I was just about to have a second top installed, when SF BMW decided to do a dealer assist trade out due to a flywheel replacement at 5,000 mi. that was due to a completely botched job. They never admitted to it but the paperwork on the 110 days and the 4 clutches plus all the motor mounts and bushing failures kinda led me to believe...
The problem is a tiny design flaw. And in 2010 theyre going to recall all our tops and replace them , and say thanks soo much for driving our luxury vehicle! Please buy more!
Not that I'm bitter, nooo. I've got a new problem besides the same pattern of wear on the 08 we just got from Oxford. The Cabrio mechanism in the 08 up until about a month ago was really silent and without any change is now starting to squeek three or four timrs while going up and down. I think it sounds like a buttrrfly hiccup?! Anybody ever had this anomoly and get a straight answer from service?
I would appreciate any knowledge before I take my fugly car in for service, Pops

Hi there Pops - just wondering where you might have got the above information from? I find it pretty difficult to believe that BMW/MINI would plan on recalling ALL current Cabrios for hood replacement, even those that will be 6 years old by 2010, and especially considering how they were so long in denail that there even was a problem of roof wear.....

And in answer to your question about the squeaks - yes, mine does too. I assumed it's just another aspect of the convertible experience (like the rattling roof mechanism and now the rear windows), but maybe I'm wrong and actually the car should be free of squeaks and rattles?!
