Offline | Hi guys, I currently have a 2002 MC, which has had quite a few problems along the way, including a bust gearbox, so I'm no stranger to Mini's poor quality control. In July, I'm getting a new job and some more ca$$h so I'm thinking of replacing my MC. I'm currently thinking of an MCS convertible, but I'm worried about this roof wear problem. Today, in the car park at work, I saw an 05 plate MCSC in black eye purple with the speedopack. It looked FANTASTIC but I had a quick look at its roof, and noticed that it's already going threadbare at the dreaded point where the white marks appear. On an 05 plate car!! I know that this would drive me crazy if it were my car... So, do Mini have any plans to change their roof material, or should I go for a standard MCS (maybe with the glass roof)??? What do you guys think? Cheers!2002 Mini Cooper 1979 Ford Mustang 2.3 Ghia BRG Cooper with white roof, 16"alloys, auto a/c, sunroof, seat heaters, sport suspension, shorty aerial |

Offline | In the overall grand scheme of things - the roof wear is minor. The newer roofs have less wear and a fix should be on the way. You could wait - but there are thousands of happy topless motorers Get the Cab ![]() |

Offline | Buy it I own both a hard top and a convertible. I've had the convertible since October and there's a bit of wear, which is normal with ANY convertible, but it isn't bad at all. I had a '94 Miata and I had to replace the top on it due to wear around 98/99. It's part of the pride of ownership in knowing that you can take the top off the car- really not a big deal in my opinion- what do you expect to happen on the moveable parts? I highly recommend buying it- you WILL NOT be sorry that you did. |

Offline | If I were buying a convertible today I would ask BMW to clarify what they think is acceptable wear and tear for the roof-and get their reply in writing. I am beginning to believe they will run the risk of continuing to produce a car with a flawed roof and replace the roof of those that complain the most-knowing the marks will reappear within weeks. Almost one year after launch ALL roofs show wear within a few weeks. I simply do not believe they will spend £4k per car replacing the roof fabric and mechanism of every car produced even if they find a cure. Replaced roofs are still showing signs of wear. The MINI convertible is fantastic (particularly as MCSC works) in anything but rain and is a very different experience to the hard top. Even when the new model arrives the current convertible will continue in production suggesting currently worsening residuals will stabilize unlike the hardtop. Would I buy one again?, at the moment -yes but the VW concept C/R is close as is the BMW 3 series CC/convertible/new Audi A4 convertible and others. Potentially this is a PR disaster for BMW. |
