| MINI2 Newbie | test drove a Dooper, still not sure! Hi Folks, fist time poster on here. I've been frequent visitor of late ![]() My girlfriend has finally been persuaded to move over to diesel engine, as shes had a 54 plated cooper since new, so the the New Cooper D has been grateful arrival ![]() TBH I'm still not too sure on the engine, after driving it. not sure if this model was down on power or not. the sales guy assured me all was OK (1000 miles on clock) Driving it in every gear I found the turbo to kick in so gently, not feeling any boost until 3K, even then felt minimum boost, if any has a idea of boost pressures that would be helpful I also done a 5th gear test from 1500RPM up to 3500RPM, and found it not to pick up 2500RPM. so felt the 240 NM / 170ish lbs/ft of torque not to be there, got no boost noises at all, not much better in 3rd either. on the other hand the girlfriend thought I was going fast enough!! please can somebody put me right, and the car I drove was a duffer. just to give to a idea where I'm coming from is I'm a VW tech, I currently have a 130 GT TDI mk4, converting a mk 1 golf to a early 110BHP GT TDI mk4 engine purely for track days, etc (after mods 150BHP before any chipping), and am very familiar with looking for problems with new car Sorry for the long post, other than that I liked the car, begrudge the idea of buying a car full price, and not VW but fully agree the mini is far better styled car anything we have on offer. Tech note: The turbo fitted was a garret GT15 type turbo with variable vane , rather than waste gate. very reliable unit capable of producing air for 150BHP on a 1.9 engine running though a full sized intercooler, so should be tunable |

Offline | Well, you should know what you are talking about. I would have thought though, that the best turbo installations do not show any obvious boost/turbo lag? Why not try another Cooper D at another dealer? Red/Black R56 Cooper |

| MINI2 Newbie | Thanks Ken, will be going to try another one soon, just wanted opinions from current owners looking at the torque curve, I would of expected more of a pull to the car. as you said the better installations should not be too viscous pick up in power, and regarding to lag the variable vane style turbo should be lag free, producing minor boost from 1200 rpm! I'm after not after too many technical replies, more what the normal owner thinks. if we did get one ordered I would be tunning it, and sharing info online ![]() |

Offline | Hi.. I think if you are worried about power and being fast you should look at the Cooper S, for me my Cooper D is fast and powerful enough as I am not racing!! I am just happy visiting the petrol station prob once a month... jeje |

Offline | Hi Crispy, I'm new here too. I'm also looking at the Cooper Diesel - on the Test Drive there appeared to be no turbo lag and plenty of power accross the range, when we swapped and my wife drove and I was in the back I could really feel the torque. I'm just trying to justify the extra ££££'s! |

Offline | What he said. ![]() But it does remain a diesel, and acceleration is not neck snapping, even if you are gently embedded into your seat as you do. You will have plenty of fun in this car, and you can be smug in the knowledge that when the time comes, the payback will be truly generous. |

Offline | What are you getting? One of the car mags (can't remember which ) said it would take 62k miles to recoup the extra outlay for the diesel over the petrol Cooper. Red/Black R56 Cooper |
