Offline | Tuning a diesel is mainly about chucking more fuel in, the down sides are likely to be increased fuel consumption and clouds of black smoke during accel. Can also cause the turbo to spin outside it's normal range which could cause warranty issues. But hay, same can be said for most types of tuning during the warranty period ![]() |

![]() MINI2 Master | Mine chucked out a hell of alot of black smoke when turbo was going, so dunno how the MOT for the new owner will go. Also it will lower the life of the car. When I got my re map done I was told it would be very hard to tell the difference in figures on a computer, they would know it has been re mapped due to the black smoke though! ![]() |

Offline | I used to own a diesel clio and that kicked out loads of black smoke when accelrating hard. that hadn't been tuned either. i think you will find black smoke is very common on all diesels, especially as they get older. |

Offline | R.E the ONE D and tuning..... is there anyway to reduce black smoke after it has been remapped? Or is it just something you have to live with if you want the extra juice? The idea of loads of smoke is the only thing putting me off having mine fiddled with. ![]() James. |

Offline | I said likely side effect. Generally there are 2 particular maps that limit diesel performance. The torque limitation map (used to limit maximum torque to match drivetrain durability) The smoke limitation map (as it says on the tin) At lower altitudes the torque limitation map normally comes into play first, it's possible the smoke map has not been changed. Common rail improves combustion because the fuel is at a very high pressure so when it is injected it atomises into a finer spray. Older diesel cars, even common rail can smoke due to wear and/or carbon deposit build up causing slight changes to injected fuel quantity and the way the fuel atomises. I didn't mention drivetrain durability before as it's the same for any type of tuning, the more torque and power the more stress on components like the gear box etc. of course most manufactures intend a durability of 100,000 miles for this type of component and set the torque limitation accordingly. It's a long time ago since I had anything to do with diesel calibration but I think that is all correct. Hope that's helpful Mark |
