Dooper more reliable than Cooper S?

Hi,

I rejected a Cooper S earlier this year as I had a 1960's like tractor engine and clutch/gearbox, and numerous other minor faults.

I could live with the minor faults, but not he major mechanical issues. Is the Dooper better in this respect, or if I have a lack of patience with new cars going wrong should I avoid it.

Any other owners who have rejected a Cooper S, and have now bought a Cooper D and are happy?

The Dooper has a more proven engine in it in terms of it's been around in various guises for much longer than the engine in the S. Cant say much more beyond that really.

Having owned both,i can say the Dooper is the better car. I had a R56 cooper S for 3months and done 3000 mile in which time the thing fell to bits.I couldnt wait to get rid of it. Now been running the Dooper since may, over 5000 miles now and no problems to report.

I'm in the same position as Aston - had Cooper S from launch and it was the worst MINI I've had. Loads of concerns and re-visit to factory but had to change to Dooper because of job change. Done nearly 9000miles since May now and despite the minor re-calls from MINI (dont mind these) I've been very happy with it. Fantastic on the fuel!

I had thoughts of maybe next year upgrading my cooper to an S, but after reading some of these posts I may just upgrade to a dooper !!

I wonder if the dooper will be the demiss of the S ? or do you think there will be still a market for the S ? and what kind of person would go for an S over a dooper ?

They are at opposite ends of the model spectrum, are they not?

S offers performance whereas a diesel offers economy, I do not see the S losing popularity.

@Blanche:

Very close to the spec I'll be going for, so good choices!

In terms of iPod: There is an Aux socket (you'll just need the £4.00 lead), but the iPod connector gives all the track information on the radio display and allows you to control the 'Pod through the radio controls - it just depends on whether you reckon you listen enough to music I guess (to spend the additional £296 ).

Something you may want to consider, however, is the multifunction steering wheel. I have had this on a couple of cars now (not MINI - please don't tell anyone here...) and absolutely love the fact that turning down the noise when traffic builds up is so easy. Again personal choice, though.

I owned a Cooper S from May 2006 until 4 weeks ago. It was faultless for me in 26k miles. I loved it.

I now own a D and it really is very good indeed and rather swift in practical motoring terms, unless of course you do all your driving from a standing start.

Refilling the tank?? .......Oh yes I have done that...err rarely.

I've had the Cooper D for a few days now, and so far so good. 400 miles of daily driving in to London, returning an unbelievable 60mpg! I don't miss Cooper S, the Cooper D is plenty fast enough for me. A far better car than the 118d I tried.

The car is very good, and no reason to return to the dealer but a few observations.
  1. I choose 15" wheels as I wanted a better ride, but road noise is bad on some road surfaces. Anyone else suffering road noise.
  2. Anyone else have the cooling fan kick in mysteriously, happened last night after a gentle drive in cold outside temperature? Sounds like a leaf blower.
Otherwise I am very happy with the car.

  1. I too chose 15" wheels specifically for ride, and I'm pleased with it. The road noise seems OK to me.
  2. Yes, I've had the fan come on once when I parked, and it did seem loud! it hasn't done it since. Reading around here it's notjing to worry about.

Sorry for being naive but why does having 15" wheels make the ride any better?

  1. Not run flat, so softer tire wall.
  2. Higher profile so more flex in tire wall.
  3. Less unsprung mass, so suspension can better respond to bumps
15" wheels also enjoy:
  1. Less rotational mass, so easier to accelerate, brake and steer.
