Dooper - Diesel additive?

Hi Guys!

It's Sunday and after catching up with my Facebook 'correspondance' I began channel flicking.........I flicked to Ideal World and they were seling a Fuel additive.

That got me thinking, I don't really know if they work or if he claims are true but I was wondering if it would be worth getting some additive for my Dooper.

Howver, I don't know which one to get - was hoping you guys with collective experiane would have an idea?

Do the new Diesels engines need it? I usually fill up with BP Ultimate Diesel 8/10 times - I really think it makes a difference.

Not triedd any aditives in mine, what difference to you get using the BP Ultimate? Haven't tried any 'premium' type diesel yet, normally I use BP or Esso, I did fill up with ASDA fuel a few weeks ago and got less MPG on that tankful. I'd be interested in yours and others findings on this.

I think you would be wasting your money on an additive dooper.

modern engines petrol and diesel just don't need them, and in fact BMW/MINI would advise against addtives.

the fact that you are using BP ultimate is enough to keep your dooper on top form.

dooper - ultimate

Hi Jon

I have found that when I use BP ultimate compared to normal BP the car feels more urgent,,,,by that I mean it seems to be a little bit pokey.

I remember when my brother put in normal shell diesel and the car felt different.....I asked him why and then I found out that he put the Shell Diesel in.

Odd thing is Iv'e been looking into it and many ppl say there is no difference between feuls anyway.......

Give BP Ultimate a go when ur tank is nearly empty (red light empty) and see if you notice any diference.

Be interesting to see what you think!

I wonder if there is any MPG or performance difference between BP Ultimate Diesel and Shell V-Power Diesel?

I normally use BP Ultimate unleaded in my car, but then changed to V-power as it was slightly cheaper, the car definatly runs better on it! And the MPG rocks as well

Havent fully decided what to run the Dooper on yet At the moment im thinking V-power, but the Ultimate diesel is about the same price so makes no odds!

I think it was 5th Gear that did a comparison on additives for petrol engines. The results showed that with the additive the engine actually produced less power than without the additive.............not sure if this is the same with a diesel engine.

I did use Millers Diesel Power Plus in my Leon FR TDI for a while and found no difference in power or mpg. Having read that BMW/MINI advise you not to use diesel additives I haven't bothered with my Cooper D. They are probably just a con anyway

As long as you use a decent fuel eg Shell, BP and don't go for a cheap supermarket brand I can't see any reason to add anything else!!

I've tried a couple of additives in the past on different cars, with varying results. Best combination was definitely Shell Optimax with NOS octane booster on my '91 Golf GTI MK2, once the knock sensor adjusts to the fuel it was pretty potent, somewhere around 100 RON (if they both do what they say on the tin?), but that it in an older engine. I have been tempted to try the same in my Cooper, but you do have to be careful, some engines really don't like certain fuels or additives. For example my old '01 Polo 1.4 would go really well on BP Ultimate, but ran awfully on Shell Optimax.

Also I had a Leon Tdi 110, and tried some additive in that and that made absolutely no difference, maybe helped starting but that was about it, so it really depends on the engine. The fact that BMW say don't use them would make me think twice, especially as I have heard that some can even damage engines (my friend had a petrol Volvo turbo and he wouldn't go near them).

As for supermarket brand fuel, well I agree that you do get an MPG advantage with something like Optimax so that's worth extra for detergents and additives, but I've been lead to believe that standard fuels (i.e. 95 ron) all comes from the same place?

Shame it's petrol, wonder if a diesel equivalent is coming soon, given the amount of diesel cars sold now?

But again I still maintain different cars like different fuels, going back to the Golf I tried this and it didn't run well, I actually found that Esso 97ron was better for driving. I may have had more power at the top end, but it comes down to what drives well.

Do not waste your time with additives, tests seem to show, if anything, they make power/performance worse.

Remember the engines are developed to run on what comes out the pumps.

I put BP Ultimate Diesel in my Dooper yesterday and didn't really notice a difference. I'm always a bit scared of damaging the engine.

It'll take several fills for the benefits to become obvious. But they will, in terms of tick-over noise as well as performance. Accept no substitutes!
