Offline | Cooper S to Cooper D? Hi guys, I currently drive a July 04 build MCS. Love the drive to bits, but now doing 2000 miles a month is starting to hurt with fuel prices going up every day. I have been toying with the idea of changing to the Cooper D but haven't as I keep thinking I would miss the power. The wife has a 118d and I notice the power drop when driving that. I was wondering if anyone had switched from a S to a D and what their views are since swapping - both good and bad. Thanks Aslan |

| MINI2 Regular | I'm sure from a standing start things would be different, but I've had the odd motorway race with the 1st gen Cooper S and kept up in my Cooper D. I'm not saying it's the fastest car in the world but it has the same amount of torque as the current Cooper S and that's quite a lot for a 1.6 diesel. They're excellent cars but as Tunster says, test drive one and see what you think for yourself. They're economical, cheap on insurance, cheap to tax and definitely not slow ![]() |

Offline | yes I agree the Dooper could be a replacement for the S, ie if you feel you don't want or need the power of the S. most people buy a Dooper for lower running costs and most people buy the S for performance. choice is basically low running costs or performance, nothing more. |

![]() MINI2 Master | There is a massive difference between the two, if you enjoy the power of a Cooper S a Cooper D probably won't excite. I have driven the 120D and that's fairly swift, though I was sick of changing gear all the time and would probably opt for the auto. Saying that, I did manage to get the 120D down to 12 MPG, so enthusiastic driving will hit the fuel economy whatever you drive. Then there's the noise of course. |

Offline | I did it last June ordered my Cooper D then all summer ran my Cooper S thinking oh no what have I done lol. But as soon as I picked up the dooper in September no regrets once its up and running it flies along the motorway. Best bit is on a back road it is still great fun. I too cover alot of miles a week and could never imagine getting 60mpg and £35.00 road tax on my Cooper S. Andy |

Offline | thanks for all your comments everyone ![]() the only thing i'm trying to work out is after changing and paying the extra to get the car, i think it will take about 3 yrs before i can get my money's worth taking into account fuel economy, cheaper insurance and cheaper tax.. but in 3 yrs i might end up changing the mini anyway for something bigger... any thoughts? thanks again aslan |
