Does this work well with diesels? I've only ever seen it used on petrol engines, to overcome its part-load inefficiency. At higher (average) speeds it has a downside, as what you save doing a 20mph minimum isn't as much as it costs to do a 60mph maximum, compared to maintaining a steady 40mph.

Not sure, but some things which could affect it are different engine map (to cope with different grade fuel/ambient temperatures), or different standard specs for the cars (checking Mini Australia shows that you get 16" wheels as standard as well as quite a few more toys).

i am quite sure that the power and tourque outputs are the same here in australia as around the world... but in saying that i still cant get what they have listed, i average around 58mpg which is close and by the sounds of things it is about the same as what everyone else is getting...

Just done the conversion and think I might see where the difference is coming from:

3.8l / 100km
61.9 mpg (US Gallon)
74.3 mpg (UK Gallon)

Had the Cooper D since Jan and it averages 53 mpg in general mixed use driving.

Went the Frankfurt motor show 3 weeks ago, a 1,000 mile round trip 95 % of which was motorway. The car averaged 64.5 mpg with an average speed of 64.5 mph. Spooky ! Return trip was quicker which saw the average for the whole trip drop to 62 mpg / 67 mph. The tank was filed with BP Ultimate diesel on the outward trip.

The highest I have been able to get for a 120 mile drive to Norfolk - no hills ! was 71 mpg but had to drive very slowly and gently, it wasn't much fun.

It's been a while since I last came on here, but things seem to be going down bank with my D All4, when I first had the car I was getting around 42 - 43 mpg, now and for the last month or so it's gone down to 39.4 with about 5000 miles on the clock, same roads used, temperature a little lower, so no real change there, performance wise it seems quicker but there is a bit of lag every now and then. I run the car on a full to empty basis and have even tried V power - made no difference.

It costing me more to run this car than my old petrol RCZ, as I was getting 39 mpg out of that and with the price of diesel

Anyone else had this problem??

Rob

I'm suffering the same thing. Fuel consumption getting steadily worse. It's now averaging around 52mpg (49mpg computer reading). 21k miles.

Any suggestions?

Most likely the "winter diesel" that is usually put in the pumps mid-October for the lower temperatures in the winter months.

Mini Cooper Clubman D

Blimey, this makes depressing reading, wish I'd found the forum before. I just took delivery of a Clubman D 2011 MY, I downsized from a C class Merc with the premise that I would be getting late 50's at least. The display is showing about 45 at the moment which is a bit dissappointing to say the least as I'm just tootling around.(but i've only done 50 miles so far, so time will tell). A long way from the claimed 64 mpg on the urban cycle....
My wife has a Cooper petrol that has averaged 38.8mpg over the last 18months. This nearly all town driving. Maybe petrol was a better option...although ironically I do find the diesel more refined which must be a first!
In the interests of nerdy data, I would like to request if we could use the Fuelly website to track real mpg's (computer displays are notoriously unreliable) You can get an android app to plug in the data or from a normal web form. There's not enough Cooper D's to make a judgement yet

(its fuelly dot com - sorry i'm not yet allowed to post a url yet !!!??)

Would be handy to gather data. I don't like being hoodwinked by this method of getting a car to fit a duty cycle - real data would be much more useful.

Published data is obtained under controlled laboratory conditions and is a statement of fact, not a 'claim'.

It's useful only for comparing cars and is irrelevant as a driver's target or expectation as it's impossible to replicates those conditions on the road.
