PSA vs BMW Dooper I have a PSA engined Dooper which has covered nearly 30,000miles in 18 months and has averaged (according to the trip computer) approx 60mpg. I have complained to my dealer, and posted here, about hesitation and flat spots particularly at low engine loads and despite changing diesel supplier regularly it's made no difference. I drove a BMW engined dooper clubman today and in all but one respect it was a revelation. Smooth, quiet and totally without hestitation, even the gearbox gave a smoother, easier gearchange. However I don't reckon the economy is going to be so good. Anyone else here made the same observations? |

I changed my 2007 Clubman Dooper to a Countryman Dooper, the BMW diesel is significantly quieter, smoother and so far appears far more responsive than the PSA engine. I would like to try the SD, I think it's going to be a blast, I'm sure this also paves the way for a full fat JCW diesel, the twin turbo from the 123D would be awesome.

We've recently changed our 2003 MX-5 (owned from being a month old - pre reg'd) for a 2011 Cooper D. Sadly, all I can say is what a disappointment. The economy is appalling (53 on a long steady run!), knocking/rattling rear suspension, and an awful lot of road noise (Bridgestone tyres on 16" rims - non run flats).

I have the psa engine cooper and very happy with it so far, i worked for peugeot and the reliability of the hdi engines was mostly faultless other than the 2.2 version. I was weary about the fuel system as this suffered with reliability, but that is a bosch system which is fitted to more than just peugeot, bmw may of had this sytem on there engines also..,

My hatch is approaching 10k miles and is showing 58mpg for the current tank which I think is probably the highest I've seen (and I have feet of lead ). I have tried Shell fuel, both FuelSave and VPower, but haven't seen any conclusive results of higher mpg over regular supermarket city diesel ![]() Chris

Hi Chris What was your consumption like around the 1000 mile mark, currently I've got 2000 miles on the clock but only managing 42 mpg, went over to Belgium in it last week and only got 46 mpg max. Mine is an All4 but I do expect better than I'm getting. My RCZ 1.6 petrol did better ![]() ![]() Rob.

My 09 Cooper D PSA auto has nearly 47,000 miles and does about 50-55mpg round town and always 60+ on a run. I've had it as much as 74mpg on a steady 300 mile run. I do seem to remember it was only about 44mpg while it was running in, maybe until about 8,000 miles.

Just checked my spreadsheet and it was around 46mpg, although as I said, I rarely drive for economy. My 58mpg is currently sitting at 49.9mpg after finding a bit of clear air on the M3 ![]() Chris

BMW vs PSA comparison Hi everyone, from a new (2 weeks) Mini owner! I've had my Cooper D PSA engine (Feb 2010 so just before the change) for 2 weeks now. I can usually get 60mpg easily, and have got it up to 75mpg doing 70mph on the motorway and around 50mph on A roads (boring but saving me a fortune over my previous 2.0i sport MX5!). Today I was lent a BMW engined Cooper D, whilst mine has its tracking fixed. You can absolutely tell it's a different engine. There's no dead spot below about 1,500 rpm, which there is in my PSA Cooper D. Once it's going though, there's not a huge difference in speed between the two. Also, I find that my PSA Cooper seems to shudder to a halt when the start/stop kicks in - almost as if you were to stall a normal car, whereas the BMW engine one 'just stops', it's much more reassuring - I'm still getting my head round the fact of feeling like you've stalled with the stop/start in my PSA car, is actually fine! Finally, the reason why actually I'm not that bothered about having a BMW engined Cooper D, is that I've only been able to manage about 55mpg, driving the same route and the same speeds as I would in my PSA engined mini, where I can get near to 70mpg! So overall, BMW engine is more refined, and has more even power distribution across all revs, but it's gonna cost you a wee bit more in the long run!
