Is my Cooper Diesel Clubman engine turning off correctly ?

Hi,

I've owned an '08 Cooper Diesel Clubman since November 2010 which has now done 33k miles (11k miles by me).

When pressing the start / stop button to turn off the engine it seems to me that the engine runs on for another 1/2 - 1 second rather than stopping cleanly. I also own a Volvo XC90 Diesel and that turns off cleanly with no hesitation.

For the record I only use Shell V-Power (the most convenient on my 44 miles round-trip commute) and drive mainly on fast A and 'crap' B roads achieving 56-65mpg according to the OBC.

Can anyone offer their own experiences as to whether it is usual for the engine to run on slightly (they all do that, Sir ) on the Cooper Diesel.

Yup, mine's the same. Can't say it's much of a problem though, I want it to stop, and it does, eventually!

Also, the PSA engine seems to have the characteristic of shuddering to a rumbling halt, rather than just turning off. The new BMW diesel engine is much smoother all round, particularly when start/stop'ing in traffic, but the trade off seemed to be much worse miles per gallon... I'm pretty happy with sounding like a tractor, whilst getting 10mpg better than the BMW engine!
