| Lifetime MPG for Cooper D I was thinking of getting an Audi A1 TDI, but a lot of forum contributors have been disappointed with their lifetime MPG (on a recent poll, average about 56, quite a few around 50, whereas published combined figure of 74 !). I am wondering if I should get a Mini Cooper D instead ! Wondered what lifetime MPG owners have been getting ? thanks paul |

| Are you looking to buy new or used? Buying new, you'll want to speak to the BMW-engined owners. For used, the changeover from the PSA engine to the BMW engine happened around September 2010. I have the BMW engined one and I'm averaging 50mpg since I've had it (approx 12k miles) where 74mpg is the published figure. I don't drive for economy though, so I'm still pretty happy ![]() Chris |

I have looked at the A1 also. Here is Australia they have just hit showrooms but are only available in Attraction spec and not in Ambition. I have just signed on a new Cooper D in auto, chilli, punch, navigation and sunroof. In the end, I did quite a bit better than an equivalent spec A1 petrol. The diesel was important to me, I like Mini's condition based servicing and I prefer a traditional auto over the dual clutch gearbox of the A1. Fuel consumption will be miles better than my Mazda SP25 so for me the difference between actual and advertised MPG is at the margin. |

Bought my 2008 Mini Cooper D auto in Feb 2011 with 6k miles. Now showing 14k miles. It's consistently given between 52 and 56mpg, mix of town and Mway roads. Having had many dual clutch (DSG / S-Tronic) cars. I'd say I prefer the dual clutch to the Mini's normal auto. Plus dual clutch will give better mpg results. Overall I'm very happy with the mini, except one issue. Rather have normal tyres with a space saver, not these ROF tyres which dealers say are a negative point when it comes to trade in..ahhhhh |

| So far the PSA diesel in my Clubman has proven to be a far more economical engine than the BMW one in my Countryman, I don't drive the Countryman anywhere near as hard as I drove the Clubman, I thrashed the nuts off that car and she averaged around 56mpg, the Countryman is in the high 40's, occasionally over 50 if I'm on a long trip. The BMW engine is far smoother with less vibration. |

| The Countryman is 10% heavier than a Clubman and has about 16% greater frontal area (and hence aero drag), so I would expect the same engine to give somewhere like 10-16% more mpg in the Clubman than it would in the Countryman. So high 40s Countryman and mid 50s Clubman are the same engine efficiency, but one has to do more work. |

| That sounds a bit much - two 55W bulbs use 0.15hp to power them. Say you are using 30hp at motorway cruise speed, then 0.15hp is a 0.5% increase, so it might reduce your 80mpg to 'just' 79.6mpg. You should live in India, where drivers are inclined to consider two of any light as one too many and take out one of each pair of bulbs to save fuel. If you don't have stop-start, I presume you won't have the intelligent alternator control that charges when braking (or is it lift-off too?) on later 2nd gens. I would be interested to see the control algorithm for that as presumably it will still use the alternator sometimes to charge the battery when cruising at steady speed (so not braking) and the battery is being slowly depleted. In normal driving with intelligent alternator control, you would not expect to see any economy loss from using the headlights since the electrical power is produced from 'surplus' energy - though if you can obtain 80mpg, I doubt you are wasting much energy! Do you ever use the brakes at all? |
