DIY Limp Mode Help!

Hi,

My wife has a 2010 mini cooper diesel with approx 35K miles.
Its recently been serviced and has been running fine with good engine torque and good acceleration.
Recently it started going into limp mode but showing NO warning lights at all..not even a triangle. The symptoms are not being able to rev over 3000rpm and when you stop the engine the fan keeps running as if the engine has overheated. There is a hot engine smell as well. Usually this clears very quickly and the car returns to normal again.
I've plugged in an OBD2 dongle and my ipad is showing no fault codes. I'm using the Command Dash software. I have noticed that when the limp mode happens the idling revs are not smooth and the revs do go up and down about 50 rpm.

Any ideas before putting it into the garage?

Cheers All

Luke

Try unplugging the mass airflow sensor and see if it runs any better, especially at idle. If it does, likely it's a problem with the exhaust gas recirculation system or the MAF sensor itself.

Aside from that, check to make sure that there are no leaks or loose clips in the intake air piping.

Does this car have the BMW or PSA diesel engine?
