DPF light regularly comes up

Hey all,

I know DPF issues have been done to death here but I cant find the answer Im after..

Got a 2009 CooperD, Peugeot engine. All works fine but last year we had the dpf light come on and persisted. Bought the car to bmw/mini (it was under warrently) and they did a force regeneration and all was ok..

However.. Im not noticing
a) Fuel economy is approx 53Mpg vs the 60 something it used to be
b) I regularly get the DPF warning light, but it goes away after about 10mins of driving at 50mpg (2k RPM)

Driving style is very random. Once/twice a week (35km, approx 45min-1hrdrive each way), rest of the time its either stationary or a couple of times around city. I would have thought the once/twice a week long drive would clear the dpf when needed but im not sure...

sooo question
1. When I know I'll be doing a nice drive can I force a regen, perhaps using a OBD adaptor??
2. I don't have any other errors
3. How can I tell if its "regenerating?" will a OBD + software like Torque pro on google play (android) help??

any other advice..
ps yeah.. got the minicooperD thinking that the weekly trip to would be ok.. not kinda regretting it...

thanks all!

J

I think the DPF needs cleaning (not a regen, but a removal and de-ashing) after a certain time. How many km's on the car?

Could be it's plugged with ash and needs a clean-out. Likely the pressure differential sensor is picking up on the clogging. A regen won't solve this.

Hi there,

thanks for the response.. today I drove to Cardiff in the mini (2hr Motorway drive), wife was driving it around the 60-70 mark most of the way and voila the dpf warning comes up after about 1hr in the car.. after 10-15mins it goes out again...

Car's done ~50,000Miles..Still a cleanout rather than regen?? The local garage quoted me £120 for it.. something about taking it out and dipping it in some special fluid...

thanks for the response!

All just thought Id post an update on this.

The local garage put the "cleaning" fluid in the DPF and cleaned it out, however the light came on again within 2-3 weeks.. considering that my regular drive is 2-5 local then 1-2 long (>30Miles) per week, the garage was surprised..

However after some investigation they realised that he DPF in the Mini is vertically mounted not horizontally like other cars. they figured that the cleaning fluid simply fell to the bottom of the dpf and didnt clean it properly..

Took it back and this is what they did
1. Took the dpf out
2. Filled it with cleaning fluid , layed it down and left it overnight
3. Over the next couple of days they rotated it
4. Drained, cleaned then "blew" it out (I think with a jetwash? but maybe just a compressor)
5. refitted
6. Forced regeneration and voila, been 1 month and no problems.

Ash was the main problem not soot so a regen wouldnt help..

They only charged me 3hrs Labour and not for the regen, diag or fluid, very happy with them..

for reference this miniD is a 59 plate with a PSA engine
