Having just bought last week an 09 Cooper Diesel I'm hearing a strange noise from the engine. I'm pretty certain it's coming form the auxiliary belt, but was just wondering if the noise is normal or if I should get it checked out?
The car has 44k miles and has full BMW service history, along with the TLC XL package. I've taken a few videos of the noise, it seems more noticeable from the drivers side wheel well. Sounds like it's the belt making a noise every revolution and the frequency follows revs.
I think the noise remains no matter what the revs are, but hard to tell as the engine noise starts to drown it out.
I'm due a service in 1200 miles which I'll do in about a month, so will get it checked over then. Was just wanting to make sure nothing is going to break terminally in the mean
time.
Hi mg6 did you work out what the noise was as it's exactly the same noise coming from mine , always thought it's was a squeaking auxiliary belt. It does become slightly quieter when run for a bit.
I had the car into the local dealer yesterday for an oil service. I asked them to check the belt specifically and they came back saying that was a normal sound for that engine.
What they did find was apparently an oil leak from the sump, requiring a new sump and gasket! A quick search suggests this may be a rouse by BMW to try and get
me to pay for work not really required. I'll certainly not be paying the £275 they want for the job. Got it booked in at an independent for a 2nd opinion.
I pointed out a leak at the sump to my Mini dealer. Seemed to be minor because the oil level wasn't dropping between oil changes. The head mechanic told me lots of diesels leak and didn't think it was worth changing the sump and gasket. That was about 30,000km ago and the car is still doing fine...
You should ask the independent about the belt noise. Mine doesn't make any such sound.
Ok thanks for that. I was considering just leaving it as is and keeping a close eye on the oil level. The reason I'm getting a 2nd opinion is that there have been no sign of oil on my driveway all it must be pretty minor.
As suspected my 2nd opinion reckons there's nothing wrong with the sump, and certainly doesn't need replacing! I agree with that diagnosis having been under the ramp with him.
There is however a fair bit of oil on the engine block on the right hand side near to where the auxiliary belt is, so I'll be booking it in with the Indy to have that investigated. Initial thoughts are a potential dodgy seal at the crank or a faulty pulley, but they'll need to get in there to know for sure
Again I'll report back in case it helps anyone else in the future.
I had a similar noise on my 2009 Cooper D when I bought it last year.
Luckily it was still under warranty with the dealer I got it from, they changed the Aux belt which did nothing and it ended up being the Cam Belt. They changed it and it has been fine since.
Final update on this. The oil leak was coming from the front crank seal which has been replaced. The noise from the belt was definitely not normal and has gone now a new belt and water pump has been fitted.
Not sure if the noise was coming from the belt itself or the water pump, either way that's sorted now. I'll not be going back to the dealer who said the noise was normal and that I needed a new sump!
havent yet, but only got it from the used dealer, so its either complain to them or pay my garage. the garage thought it was the alternator belt. (its a cooper d)
Yes did spot it when buying the car but they convinced me it was normal engine noise with a diesel. And it seemed to quieten down after a run around.
