| MINI2 Regular | Errrrt sound on hill starts I just got a used '03 MCS, manual transmission. Sometimes when I am taking off from a stop, when I let the clutch about half way up and the tires just begin to move the MINI makes a sound, that is sort of like a squeak, high pitched but fairly soft in volume. The sound stops when the car is moving and my foot is completely off the clutch. I don't hear it in any gear other than first. Also, it doesn't happen every time, but seems to happen when I am taking off a little faster. Most often on slight hills, but sometimes on flat ground too. I am sure it is not the tires spinning. Does anyone have any idea what is making this sound? Has anyone had similar problems? |

| Amiga 500 to PS3 20 Years | Sounds like the tyres hooking up to me. If you pull of quickly, especially if giving a lot of revs up hill you get like a real minor spin for like 1/8 turn of the wheel and it let out a little squeak. Also dpends on tyres and road surface. If you kicked in DSC the light would flash on the tacho. ![]() It was acceptable in the 80's |

Offline | Hey there, My 04 MCS just started doing this also - so far the conclusion is the Flywheel. BMW has a new "updated " flywheel to replace the ones that make this noise. My 04 just had the flywheel replaced with the new one -- now it makes the sound you described. It is going back to the dealer in a week or two for the Inpection 1 -so I will have them check it out then and keep you posted. ![]() |

| MINI2 Regular | The noise doesn't bother me that much, I just want to make sure its not a sign that my car is going to die. In Massachusetts we have the Lemon Law for used cars, so if anything it wrong with the car that affects its driveability of safety in the first 60 days the dealer has to fix it. If this is a problem, I'd like to catch it before day 60. So, is this just an annoying soud caused by the flywheel, or is it a sign of larger problems to come? |

| MINI2 Regular | That sounds expensive. The Clutch feels perfect to me, though. It is still the smoothest clutch I've ever used. I let my father take it to work today because he works with a guy who, up until a few years ago, was a full time mechanic. I'll let you guys know whatever I learn. |

Offline | I have a MCS 04 Plate and mine was doing the same thing, so took it into the dealers and they told me it was a “characteristic of my car”!!! Was not happy as I was sure it was due to a faulty thrust bearing - after many arguments with Dealer, Mini UK and local rep they agreed to replace my clutch under warranty and guess what the noise has now stopped! ![]() PS the dealer told me that had i had to pay for their time and parts the bill would have been £985!!! |

| MINI2 Regular | In my case I think i solved the problem. I think I was user error Upon closer examination of my driving style, I realized that in situations where I was accelerating quickly from a stop I was beginning to release the clutch a fraction of a second before I was beginning to step on the gas. Over the last few days I've been very careful not to make this mistake, and the sound has completely dissapeared. Thanks for all your help, everyone. |

Offline | Mine also made that noise. The sound is the clutch release bearing, mine has been replaced once will need to be replaced soon again. It only happens on inclines or when you pull away briskly. |

Offline | Mine does it too, I took it to the dealer last week and they told me "BMW are aware of the situation and working on a fix, we'll be in touch when we know more" ![]() |
