is anyone going to miss the Cooper Supercharger Whine?

personnally i think its going to take away from its character when they add the turbo charger. BUT, when i think about how cool its going to sound when the blow off valve kicks in, i get alittle excited.

No, because there will be turbo whistle instead.

BOVs that are too loud can be a bit ricey IMO, but a whistling turbo is every bit as good as a whiny supercharger.

Yes I will miss the whine. I think that BMW are making a mistake by going down the turbo charger path for the following reasons.
1. The supercharger prevents "lag" on take off and this will be more pronounced if they stay with the 1600cc format.
2. The Mini has been so successful because of its innovative design and use of the supercharger. If I had wanted a car that "blows of at high revs I would have purchased a WRX or a Nissan Skyline.I'm not into ricing !
3. BMW run the risk of loosing repeat customers like myself with this change. I have just ordered a Cooper S with the JC works factory fitted.

Superchargers just reek of class Superchargers are found on the most expensive Mercs, Jags and Range Rovers... they're fantastic creations.

Turbochargers can be found on Golfs, Lorries and Vans and yucky diesels. Common as muck

Yes I think most people will miss the Whine of the supercharger , As regards 'turbo lag' it is almost a thing of the past with the new generation of twin scroll turbos , so I think we should be more positive looking ahead .

I will miss the supercharge whine, but I am confident BMW will come up with turbo sound that will be equally as beguiling.

Merc are apparently phasing out superchargers for a new generation of Turbo engines.

I don't think the mini will get 2 turbo's 'cause that will be much too expensive, so the turbo lag will be very likely to be a new 'feature' of the coming mini. This turbo instead of supercharger is a real let-down to me. And I think a turbo won't make the same sound as a supercharger.

vw introduces a turbo+a supercharger with a 1.4 liter engine b.t.w.

People will be putting dump valves on the next turbo charged mini!!

Personally I love the supercharger whine, but I think ultimately, the turbo maybe run more freely and be more efficient.

You misunderstand, 'twin scroll' is one turbo with 'devided inlet' housing which ensures a faster response and a minimal amount of 'lag' ,not 2 turbos ,

Well I've only picket it up this morning, and already enjoyed 150 miles of supercharger wine - fantastic.

I suppose we can't really comment on the turbo until we hear one for real - so long as it doesn't sound like a truck struggling up a hill

I too think that the move to a turbocharged engine is unfortunate. The only car I've driven which made 100+ HP/L via turbocharging was severely affected by turbo-lag, and was rather lifeless below 4000rpm.

Excessive BOV noise is NOT a good thing as far as I am concerned, and I'm sure that it will not be a feature of the new MINI if BMW hopes to attract mature (30+) buyers.

the supercharger is a nice feature on the MCS, but I don't doubt for a second that the new Turbo will be a great car, if not better than what we already have, why on earth would MINI risk loosing sales or making a crap car?

I know I won't miss the whine of those that keep bashing it and saying it won't be as good and that the Supercharger is what the S stands for They'll have to eat their past posts one day when they order a turbo MINI

Its only a forum you know!

Economics!!!, why do you think it's only the better cars that use superchargers & the cheaper quality cars that use turbo's
Personally I won't be missing the Supercharger whine, because I have no intention of even considering selling my MCS for many years!!.
By the time I sell my car, we will be running on Hydrogen gas or Batteries

Agreed. The two engines will definitely have different characteristics, but I'd be very surprised if the turbo MINI is a dud.

I find the negativity towards turbos a bit odd to be honest. I wonder how many of these people have actually owned a modern turbo powered car? My previous car was a 2001 Mk4 1.8T GTI and I loved it's engine, and more importantly it's tuneability. The engine certainly wasn't one of the reasons I sold the car. In many ways it was the equal to the MINI engine, in some ways better, in some ways not, but certainly no worse when considered as on overall package (engine only I'm talking about here). I'd say the 2.0T in the Mk5 GTI is probably a better engine in some respects than the current Cooper S engine. The new Golf has bags more grunt that's for sure.

Naysayers continue to bury your head in the sand at your peril!

Yep. And, S never stood for Supercharger anyway. I have no doubt the greater fuel economy of the waste heat recovery turbo will convert a lot of people. Perhaps it will be called the MCK for Kompressor.
