Onboard computer obsession...

Please tell me I'm not the only new Minier who has been obsessed with this little gadgety thing for the first couple of weeks, only to realise that it's a fast track to abject insanity...

Having left it set on 'range', it was intriguing to note this morning that after the 11km trip to work I had more range on arrival than when I left home.

I think I'll leave it on outside temperature and just enjoy the ride.

MsAmy.

I pretty much always leave mine on mph as I can't get used to the centre mount speedo.

Only if I'm getting low on petrol (range) or if I want to know if it's past the 7 degrees outside that'll make it worth lowering the hood do I start playing with the OBC.

Sorry I wasted $200 optioning the one on my 2002 MCS ... it's way off calculating MPG

I don't really use that feature but I thought it calculated MPG based on your last xx miles, not what you actually expect over a full tank with a variety of conditions.

The original OBC only calculated MPG since last reset, while the current OBC also shows "at the moment" MPG.

Aha! I must asy I don't even look at it... but I do like it for using as a speedo that is right on the tach.

I don't have this feature on my MCS as it was added effective with September 2003 builds, but having owned a 1967 Austin Cooper S I'm quite comfortable with a center-pod speedo

It's probably a case of getting used to it - I've only had my MINI a month and a half. The painful thing about not relying on the speedo is that I keep getting very low on fuel before I finally notice it's on red! Also I've found I've left an indicator on more than once (enjoying the HK to much to hear).

So I should get used to using the central speedo more!

I do tend to fiddle with it when in traffic, and take a quick look at my average MPG when filling up.

It normally sits on the temperature for me, although I do tend to flip it to the current speed setting when I put the cruise control on, feel its a more accurate reading that the centre dial.

I always have mine set on the current speed - i much prefer not having to look across at the speedo - although of course i still do

I'll often have a flick through it at times, but then ive only had the car a month and didnt have it previously....

Interesting.

In Australia the speedo is mounted on the steering column, whilst the big, centre-mounted dial is the tacho, with the computer in it. We don't seem to have the current speed display option, something I'd really like (Ok, my last car was an Echo (Yaris/Vitz), I got kind of used to it - and the centre-mounted thing).

I wonder if it can be re-programmed?

My last car was an Echo too!

Anyway, how do you get the tach to give you your speed? When I go through the options, its just Cons., Ave. Speed, Range, and outside Temp.

There is nothing unusual about that. It is constantly recalculating an estimate for your range based on your recent rate of consumption. If I've been driving in the city and have half a tank left, it will estimate mileage for a half tank based on my city MPG. At this point if I start driving on the highway, my MPG will jump up and (appropriately) my range should rise also.

That makes sense when put like that rkw - I'm just *REALLY* rubbish at maths, so most anything numerical makes my head hurt long before logic sets in. I is good at proper English but!

Interesting brett (and cheers for letting me know)... I wonder if it *can't* be done, or they won't do it - I doubt we'd have entirely different software in Australia - and no software is unhackable.

Stupid Australian design rules (or whatever rules these come under, heaven knows we have enough of them) - I would love to know how the Echo/Yaris gets away with the centre-mounted speedo here. Maybe because it's angled towards the driver?

Same here, I wonder if it is an option added at a later date? mine is a May/June 03 model and has the same options as yours.
