MCS Engine Issues

Some background. I have had the MCS MkI for about 9 months now from new.
Mileage clocked is approximately 1500 kms. Still in the run-in phase as I work from
home and with a child barely a year and a half old, the car is more of a weekend
distraction than my commuting vehicle of choice BUT I love the car.

Anyway, the yellow engine emissions light comes on and off chronically and lately,
the engine feels sluggish. When in 2nd revving just under 2000 rpm, the engine feels
like seizing. Is this normal or is it the car itself?

When shutting off the ignition, the car shudders before coming to a standstill. Has anyone
experienced this?

For not wanting to sound daft because I am about to bring it back to the dealer to sort out the light, the engine revs between 1000 to 1500 rpm up and down with a resonating boom
but sounds clogged up at the backend of the exhaust. Is this again normal.

I am at my wits end trying to discern if there are indeed engine problems or just MCS traits.
Maybe I am runing it in too hard. I have been revving it to just under 4500 rpm and 150 km/h
which are the recommended limits and I believe these numbers have been buffered anyhow so I have not been abusive or have I?

I loath to send it back to the dealer (BNW) because ignornace seems to be the operating philosophy there.

I have a 2,500 mile old Supercharged MCS and I don't recognise any of those symptoms as normal MCS characteristics.

Your running in procedure is pretty much as recommended, so it's unlikely you've damaged it that way.

Sorry I can't be more help, but it sounds like a trip to the dealer from here.

Good luck.

Tigger.

Thanks. Seems like I have to take it back to the dealer to sort out the whole affair.

Just took it for a run just a while ago and the car died on me at the toll booth.

All warning lights came on and I re-started the engine and everything seemed fine again
except for the yellow engine emissions light which remained on.

Does the engine rev up and down every other second when idle between 1000 to 1500 rpm? Do not want to sound daft when explaining the faults to the dealer though.

Hope I did not buy a lemon because I intend to stick through the supercharger route.

Sending the car into ICU soonest then

Well, it doesn't really sound like normal and the engine is not supposed to rev up and down like that either. Well, if you have a modified CAI then this might explain it, but with a stock MCS no.

Don't worry too much about it, based on my own experience somewhat frequent visits to the dealer are part of the fun of owning a MCS (not to mention MCSW) So you might as well get used to it and try to make best out of it...that's what I did anyway. Still love the car though.

Somebody here @ MINI2 said it quite recently: it seems that the Mk1 has all the traits of a true classic car...

Ps. Better take good care of your dealer contact person

Well, I just went to the garage and started it up again just to make sure I am not going insane.

Upon ignition, there is a somewhat vibrating sound coming from just under the top left hand corner in front of the passenger side.

The engine started to rev all the way up to about 2800 rpm and came down to about 500 rpm at which time it sounded as if it was dying and the car shuddered along with it. Left it running for about 5 minutes and the vibrating noise was still audible but less loud.

Maybe a cold engine but then again, the sound should not be there? Best to record it the next time I am down. Anyway, as expected, the engine settled around 1000 to 1500 rpm revving up and down every other second.

Should it rev at a particular point and should it be going up and down? I am trying to dsicern if it is an engine problem or the supercharger is not functioning as it should.

I had this problem when I retro fitted the M45 to a 2001 celica! it was caused by the idle valve control, which in turn affected the throttle position sensor thus causing the idle to be all over the place.

I have not played with the mini yet but from experience it sounds like you have a sensor problem, if you EML is on too then I would get yourself and OBDii and check it out or get it down to BMW as you more than likely cause dammage to your engine! also it could be as silly as your bypass sticking...

Full on stock car. Warranty runs out mid next year after which I think it will take a long drive
to Dorset for the proper treatment it deserves.

In retrospect, if the car was modded, the dealer would have eaten me alive if I took a claim on the engine. Patience paid off I guess.
