Offline | Noticed the other day that water had been leaking from the expansion tank. Got my mate to look into the tank whilist I revved the car and bubbles were coming out. He suggested that it was most likely the head gasket that had gone. Took the car straight away to my local dealership to get it checked out. Their anaylsis was that the supercharger unit was broken and needed replacing (Not sure exactly how its broken. Its done 41000 miles on a 52 plate.). My mate who used to be a mechanic was unsure as to how this caused bubbles in the expansion tank. I tried searching the net to find out but can't find the answer. Our guess is that the water cooling system also runs through the supercharger. Is this correct? Or can someone point me in the direction of a website that could explain it to me. Thanks Adam |

| "Just Like That!" | Hi Bowman, I can't comment on the bubbles, but I do know that my own MCS is for ever pumping water out of the expansion tank too! There are times (not very often though) when I can hear a gurgling from behind the dash which is when I assume it is letting the water out; I've never been able to get out and confirm because it generally happened when I was stuck in traffic on the M25! ![]() UJ Club: GB064 |

| MINI2 Master | yes the Supercharger does run the water pump, so may be related. Seems strange as you very rarely hear of a supercharger packing up. from what you say it sounds more likr head gasket. Is there any mayo round the oil cap etc. Also if in the farout chance it is the Supercharger. Buy one off ebay as loads on there and most are delivery milage and about 150 quid. BMW will charge you nearer 1000 pounds to supply one. |

Offline | Managed to get the supercharger on a gesture of goodwill from BMW so I only had to pay for labour. If I was to purchase the supercharger from BMW it would be £800. (In the unlikely event of another I will look on ebay, cheers) An interesting point from the Service guy was that they have never had a Mini in with a blown head gasket. Recieved the car back today. Drove it about 30 miles back, seems slightly different in the way the power comes. That could just be me though. Maybe a need to run it in a bit. |

Offline | If it seems different to the way the power comes in, they may have put the face lift version of the supercharger which has the teflon coated blades! Alex |
