replacement air by pass valve

heres a quiz for you guys out there

some may have read my previous thread regarding lack of power on my cooper s with hartge conversion

i tried a local dealer (robert shaw racing) they were clue less
then i rang hartge
and then they told me to take it to them in uxbridge aprox 300 miles away

they did diagnostics checked the map no problems they seemed perplexed so i pointed them in the direction of the air by pass valve as advised on here

so they ring me up and say yep its the valve
theyve stripped the inlett off to get to it £35 for part

guess the total labour time to replace the valve theyve quoted
oh by the way theyve stripped it down so im stuck

guess the final bill

who can be the closest come on you regulars

Bypass valave is only a 40 min job. I had a friend take mine off and tweek it closed and replace it in under and hour!

I would say 100 in labour and 35 for the part ...so foir the reapir about £150 inc VAT

I they charge you for diagnosing time computer fault reading time etc etc then I'd say add anouther 2 or more hours which is £200.

They obviously did it for free to preserve their excellent customer relationship.

DO NOT PAY THIS BILL ......That is a rip off beyond all belief. We would charge circa £150+vat (Parts & Labour).....We dont claim to be the cheapest either (the best yes). To check the bypass valve would take me under ONE MINUTE from the car coming in...so dont be waffled with 'It took a long time to find the fault sir'
...Why didnt you bring it to us?
Hartge conversion is just a smaller pulley & early MTH remap coupled with a very high price tag. My guess is they dont have many customers anymore but when when one comes in.....its gonna be creamed to make enough profit to be able to stay down the pub the rest of the week.
Best Regards Roland GTT

I agree! If you knew it was bypass when it went to them its no more than 30 mins to 1 hour labour and the part cost £150m like I said.

Sounds like they are billing for several hours of "finding" the fault and ECU diagnosis/resetting.

RIP OFF

That is stupid. I know the dealer as well. Easy to work out as they are the UK distributor for Hartge and based in Uxbridge. As Roland said. Do not pay this bill. Ask them to break down where the costs are and why, for a relatively simple job they are charging so much. By your post though I suspect you have already paid.

It was acceptable in the 80's

I had problems with mine, it was supposedly repaired under warranty but Roland soon
saw the bodge job on it when it was booked in for GTT220.
As for the stealer you mention, they carried out the Hartge conversion on my old S. A lot of money for a pulley and a remap!
