Picked up the Cooper S - gutted!!!

Picked up the cooper S friday and love it to bits.

Went on my 1st long run and noticed a vibration through the steering @ speed. Went to have the wheels balanced sat AM only to find that the bottom arm rear bush on the n/s was hanging and the car unsafe to drive. Was only able to locate one from D Lovett Mini so one should be in tomorrow.

Drove the car for 2hours after waiting 3 weeks to collect it! Slightly annoying seeing as it was MOTd a week before i bought it. Shall be having strong words tomorrow!!

Is this a known fault??

Chris

Thats the annoying thing. Bought it privately so no warranty.

I work for Audi so deal with this sort of thing day in day out. Considering you can move the wheel back and forth by nearly 2 inches that show how bad it is. Hasnt happened overnight so i hope i get it resolved.

Apart from that the cars great

Hi Chris,

How bad was the vibration , the reason I ask is I picked up my MCS on Sunday private sale and driving home at speed on the motorway I noticed a vibration through the steering. It wasnt major but still a vibration, so ignored it as it was at speed and i thought a little vibration would be expected. I now only drive at low speeds monday to friday as I work local, so not noticed it again. Am I now being the typical paranoid mini owner, I have its 40000 service on Friday, I suppose I will get them to have a look, as I suppose it will fairly noticeable. Just out of interest will i Get charged for them to look and tell me if there is a problem ?

Cheers
Nick

If its a 'wobble' type vibration thats only felt at speed, its likely that yr tracking is out. If BMW are looking at it they'll charge an arm an leg for "laser wheel alignment" you can get it done cheaper elsewhere, but if its not that then BMW are the best people to advise what it is and whether or not your warrnty will cover it.

Thanks Streeters, however there is my problem I dont have any warranty left, 03 plate and was a private sale, hence the paranoid mini owner.

The vibration wasnt too bad but only @ speed.

When the car is stationary grab the front two wheels with both hands and see if there is any play in them. I drive cars everyday with wheel vibrations and it is really hard determine whether it is tracking, wheel balance or in this case a suspension joint.
