Offline | Have I damaged my engine? Last night I overtook a slower moving car. I was in first gear (yes THAT slow). As I floored it, I indicated to go around him and somehow managed to turn my lights off. In my panic to turn them back on I forgot to change gear and the car hit the revlimiter for a couple of seconds. I am hoping the revlimiter is there to stop any damage being done. The car is run-in with 2500 miles on it. |

Offline | There is nothing to compare with blind terror to sharpen up your senses is there ? I doubt that you have damaged your engine it is pretty tough with it`s drop forged steel crankshaft , forged con rods , oil cooled pistons , etc . I suggest a relaxing cup of hot chocolate , and eat more carrots . PS go well don`t they ! Big Al |

Offline | Don't worry about it at all - that's why there is a rev limiter, so you can't damage your engine by overreving. Obviously you should try to avoid a habit of driving where you bounce off of the revlimiter, but finding it once or twice on accident you've got nothing to be concerned about. (Not to say that you couldn't overrev on downshifting, say from 4th to 1st - which could damage your engine )+ 2002 MINI Cooper S - Dark Silver / White roof, Sport, Premium, Lapis blue leather + 1965 Mini Traveller - Tartan Red / White roof, 1275, Cooper S discs, fully restored/renewed |

| MINI2 Master | I agree with Bruce, the Rev Limiter would prevent you from sustained harmful over-revs that could overcome your valve springs and float a valve, burning it, or worse causing it to strike something at high velocity. But this safety device only stops the engine from doing this to it's self. If you were to dump the clutch in a gear too short for the engine's max RPM, then the inertia of the car, through the grip of the wheels, through the transmisson, would happily blow up your engine. The factory rev-limiters are often set at a conservative number, so that when all the rev limiters are set, they cover all examples of produced engines, throughout their useful lives. So, your rev limiter is designed to protect an engine comming from the factory that met the minimum specifications, and is XX years or XXX,XXX km old. Don't make a habit of this, but you're fine. P.S. The MINI's computer recorded this stunt, and the dealer will know the max RPM you hit now. ![]() Chilli Red/White Cooper S, Sport Pack & Sunroof. Offline | Take it from me it shouldnt hurt it. Been doing some drag racing with mine for a bit now and yes I hit the rev limiter quite often. got 20k on my MCS now not a hint of problems. Did my second Oil change and no signs of abnormal wear (no visable metal shavings). Compression check shows near identical to new within 2lbs give or take. I dont have a dyno so I cant tell hp diff. ET's are still in the same range 14.9-15.2. just my 2cw 02 MCS DS/W (Totaled November 02 on Fall Folage Run) 03 MCS DS/W (See my MINI Profie for extensive list of mods) |

Offline | Big brother is watching what I do? So if I accidentally exceed the run in revs during the run in period and get some engine problem later on, the dealer can fob me off with the 'exceeded the documented RPM, your own fault' ploy?!? ![]() |
