| oil cooler-Does it drain when when having oil change? Does anyone have the final correct answer? I brought this from 'Maintenance forum' MINI S: Having my 'first' oil change. Is there any information if the oil cooler is or should be drained with the sump? I would asume it would be a better for the first change. Any idea? BruceK Moderator & Sponsor Posts: 3041 This question has been raised before, but there doesn't seem to be a clear answer. Apparently, when a MINI dealer does an oil change on a Cooper S equipped with the standard oil cooler, the procedure is no different than for an oil change for a standard Cooper which does not have the oil cooler. This probably means one of two things: 1. The oil cooler is designed to drain automatically when the oil sump plug is removed and all oil is drained from the Cooper S engine. (very, very unlikely as the Cooper and the Cooper S both require the same amount of new oil to fill the engine) or... 2. A Cooper S oil change really only changes perhaps 90% of the engine oil, the other 10% remains in the oil cooler and ends up being mixed with the fresh fill oil. (I think this is the likely situation, and it's not too satisfactory, but I guess the engineers weren't too upset about this). Getting back to the original question, I don’t think anyone has removed or somehow drained a Cooper S oil cooler. yorobby MINI2 Junior Registered: Jan 2002 Location: FORT LAUDERDALE Posts: 23 Thanks BruceK. "10% remains in the oil cooler and ends up being mixed with the fresh fill oil. (I think this is the likely situation, and it's not too satisfactory" If this is the case. I am not going to be a "happy camper'. After the break-in period, there is a lot of crap that is in the oil, even %10 is not "satisfactory". I was hoping that there was a way to drain this oil as is done with the brake lines{using mechanical assistance) September 26th, 2002 03:08 PM BruceK Moderator & Sponsor Registered: Mar 2001 Location: San Antonio, Texas Posts: 3041 BruceK Remember, I just posted my personal guess on the oil cooler situation - I really don't know for sure. Anyone with more info? (MINIGUY?) Please feel free to clarify. Thanks! |

| MINI2 Regular | Be happy In theory, the "bad" krap should all be in the filter. the small amount of dirty "looking" oil left in the cooler, should not have any contaminents in it that could damage your engine. Remember, the filter is there to stop all damaging Krapola. Let's just say: that the 10% of colored oil that is left is to give the new oil some color so that you can see it on the dipstick.........That's my story & I'm sticking to it,,,,,,,,,, ![]() 2004 Pepper White Copoper S on order :white: 2002 Pepper White/Black Cooper, 9800 miles :white: 1972 Gunmetal Innocenti Cooper 1300, miles unknown |

Offline | Throw good oil after bad? Might be a little odd this one, but when you change the oil, drain the old oil tip in a couple of pints of new and turn it over a few times (dont start it) to flush the cooler. Replace filter. Then fill with new oil. Costs a little more, but it shifts the s***y stuff out. ![]() |

It has been a long time since I placed this post My opinionj of 10% is still the same. that the 10% of colored oil that is left is to give the new oil some color so that you can see it on the dipstick....That seems to be the way you should look at it. |
