Offline | Not sure. Truly doubt it. Don't be upset. I hardly heard of any real problems with anyhing damaging the fan from underneath. Regardless, I have a mossmini skid plate on the way for general underneath purposes. ![]() NY/NE Mod |

| MINI2 Senior | No matter how many have/n't reported damage (yet) that power steering fan's in a BAD place. It’s begging to be fed road debris. Picture a plastic shopping bag or other litter getting stuck in there. YIKES! It’s bad enough when one suffers the misfortunate of a plastic bag getting stuck on a hot exhaust! Then for those of us in areas that receive significant annual snowfall there are those roadway "land-mines" - chunks of ice & snow that drop from the wheel wells of cars. Often these fall off right in front of you, and there's nowhere to go but over. I can just picture one of these "bouncing freezies" getting up into that fan and wrecking the works. Whatever the case I'm ordering from Moss, as I don't think they'll address this issue in time for my car (Jan 03) mc |

| MINI2 Regular | Plate?? There is a plate under there, but it does not look like it will do anything to save the fan. I just stuck my camera under there & snapped this picture of my October 14, 2002 build Cooper S. As you can see, my camera could have gotten stuck in it, really easy. ![]() 2004 Pepper White Copoper S on order :white: 2002 Pepper White/Black Cooper, 9800 miles :white: 1972 Gunmetal Innocenti Cooper 1300, miles unknown |

Offline | Yes. Precarious positioning. look closely under your car and you will see that MINI put a steel guard in front of the cat for trashbags and crap I presume. The fan seems to have an ammount of plastic built right in front of it, as part of the housing. Now something may just come along someday. Sure. But this is neither a US only feature nor one specific to the MCS. Last year many a MINI automobile saw nasty conditions to equal the ones here. I have seen only prognostications/worries. Can you show me a link to someone who has a busted power steering fan from road matter? Just curious/lazy ![]() Again. I believe it is a design flaw. If I can see the fan, it's vulnerable. I have no proof other than that. Does anyone? I am awaiting my mossmini stainless steel plate. My car deserves it. PS: I've been running over the unavoidable bags and they've all come out the other end. Phew! ![]() NY/NE Mod |

Offline | GMINI, I won't do the search for you, but yes, there have been several reports of PS fan failure that have been reported as caused by foreign matter injestion. (FOD for you aircraft types.) As I understand the problem though, when the fan goes, the fuse blows, and the same fuse supplies the radiater fan. As infrequent as the problem may be, the end results have been reported as catastrophic. I plan to buy a skid plate for my MINI's Christmas gift. ![]() MC/VR/B/PP&SP/CVT/Xenon |

Offline | Thanks Gmini. I wish I was enjoying it but the car is at the dealer for the sixth time. I won't bore you with the details but I'll be putting that plate on this week when I get the car back. '03 Cooper S |

Offline | Not sure... On my 2003 Cooper S I picked up last week, I had the dealer install the Moss skid plate before I even got there, and I haven't had a chance to examine the underside of the car closley yet - so I'm not sure if they've improved things. I sure felt a lot better travelling across the country with a skid plate though! Especially the last day driving through a few inches of freezing slush in northern New Mexico during a driving snowstorm. ---> Kendall |

Offline | kgelner, Smart move. I live out here on the East Coast and the thought of slush, ice chunks, and all of the other winter stuff out there scares me. I installed a MossMini skid plate on my Cooper about 3 weeks ago. The hardest part of the installation was holding the skid plate up with my head while attempting to put the hex bolts in the correct holes. All worked out OK, after I got my son to lend a hand. Have not even given the skid plate another thought once it was installed, until I took the OEM plastic one to the dump the other day..... Offline | Paddy- Missed ya. Oh well. Like you said- definitely next time. Some time. Just got the plate this morning. Stainless steel. Beautiful. Coupla scratches, though. Made me consider. But really. Under the car... isn't it my secret? It's not a finish, after all. Then again. Maybe I'll send off to invinca-shield to cut me some scotchcal... ![]() I will install this weekend. Time to break out those jack stands. Simple enough on my back work. My necks gonna be sore. I have to call the MINI/BMW aftermarket guys see what they will give me to do it on their lift Monday. And of course- I will remember to noink the 3.1 from work. Though it looks like Dave in Denver already posted a pretty explicit set. I'll be getting my car higher though. And it is stainless steel after all... ![]() NY/NE Mod |

Offline | Re: GMINI, EPilot already posted the link to the pictures. It's http://minicooperonline.com/modules....pic&topic=1701 By the way, I heard on another board that the PS fan circuit was now independent of the cooling system with '03 models. Can anyone confirm or deny this rumor? Thanks. '03 Cooper S |
