Offline | running in yer mcs!! the bmw way Just read alot of good and bad opinions about the running in period...thought I'd let you into a secret... When I had my old mini cooper before I got my latest mcs (which I am running in at the mo, not doing anything anal, just commonn sense and not thrashing the car)I was in a garage filling up my mini, when a un registered mini cooper came in for its first fill up. The bmw/mini mechanic filled the car up and drove off in front of me, onto the dual carrige way he floored it, I was flat out and being in an identical car, staying with him. He was abusing the car and I thought I would let the dealer know, but had more pressing things to do at the time. So you guys running you high tech mcs in the damage may already have been done by a crazy bmw/mini technician... really, the mcs should be run in Im sure, it gives out a fair bit of power for a small engine, but enjoy the car, its not going to break or do damage if you do 4505rpm!!! I know someone who picked up a ferrari 360 from the factory and got a shot on the test track, he asked the mechanic if the car was pre-run in, and if its okay to let rip, he nodded! a monumental experience and the car is still around today without any probs. | M5 Extraordinare! | Ya its usually not a problem.. there are people who do not follow the recommendations and MINI knows that. they would not have made a engine that would die if it wasnt broken in correctly... But I would rather breakin the car properly and make sure everything wears in slowly. its not only the engine we are talking about but other parts too. |

Offline | @grant watson I admit these incidents keep happening with car dealer service personal. I was passenger when a BMW mechanic tested steering problems on my 316 (due to uneven brake wear). He wasnīt actually hitting the limiter, but I thought if he does 4500 rpm with me on the passenger seat what happens when heīs alone... But I would think it makes a difference if you give it the stick for your first 1200 miles or on a five mile drive to the gas station. AFAIK Ferrari engines are tested on a dynamometer quite long before delivery. I donīt know if a whole running-in program is covered by that, but itīs at least more than nothing. Offline | sorry, must have come out wrong, I'm not saying that you shouldn't run in... just thought you should enjoy the car and not worry if your changing gear at the wrong revs, keeping the car at 3000rpm for 10sec longer than you should etc.... yes ferrari's are on dynos before they leave the factory, but the have a limited revs break in policy too, well for the 360 anyway. just saying that as with most cars a little respect to the mechanicals (yes not just the engine but the brakes and tyres, etc etc,) is all that is needed, as the min documentation is saying in a T. I was dying to rev the cooper s and see what it can really do round a corner when I got mine on the 1st of march, as a result I have been to edinburgh, Glasgow, inverness etc, all long journeys for me and as a result covered 1100, miles in 2weeks. so only 150 to go before I can rev the car (without thrashing it). |
