question about tires on the S...

WHat's the difference between the Performance run-flats and the All Season run-flats that come on the S with 17" wheels? What is the tire brand for each (in the US)? I ordered mine with the all season but if the Performance tires have good wet capability, I'll get those instead.

For performance run-flats you get Pirelli or Dunlops.

I got Pirelli and they are wearing fast compared to Dunlops.

I don't know what you get for All season runflats.

17" OEM tires are listed in the FAQ on factory wheels:

http://www.mini2.com/forum/thread3494_.html

The all-season tires are extremely heavy

Discussions of OEM performance tire handling in the wet can be found by doing a
ALL forum posts for dunlop* pirelli* wet showing threads.

I don't think you get to choose which performance tire when ordering.

Don't get 4 season tires - they are bad summer tires and bad winter tires!

My dealer told me that the Dunlop runflats were all-season.

only if 3 of the seasons are fall and the other one summer - downright undrivable in the snow

I think there is some controversy. I was first told the Dunlops were all-season, and the Pirellis were performance. Then I saw an S with Goodyear Eagle RSA's and was told those were the all-season. I have the all seasons coming (mainly for treadwear purposes), but I don't think I'll be fond of the RSA's again (I had them on my current car).

EDIT: Just read the FAQ....no controversy, just bad info initially I guess.

I got the crapyear, I mean Goodyear RS-A all-seasons. The 17" wheel/tire weigh 50-lb (as measured on my bathroom scale). The winter performance of the RS-A's wasn't that bad ... for an all-season. Certainly nothing like a real snow tire. My summer wheels/tires save 16.5 lb per corner of unsprung weight!

thh SP 9000s are DEFINATElY NOT safe for Winter driving. i had Pirelli w210 on until a couple of weeks ago and then switched back to my Dunlops. 2 days later we had snow and I can tell you without question they are utterly undrivable in any type of icy road. Just about make do in light snow but useless after it packs down.

I would think in Ohio you are going to need decent snow tires so get decent summers as well - costs about the same over 3 years.

Don't get performance tires, just get the all seasons and then buy a lightweight wheel tire combo. The preformance tires are a joke because the wheel is so heavy, and they are runflats so they are also heavy.

The Goodyear runflats [30lb] are heavy while the Dunlop and Pirelli runflats [around 22lb each] are comparable in weight to many conventional replacements:

As I mentioned, I think the Goodyear runflats are lighter than that (about 25 lb). My wheel and tire together weigh 50 lb.

50 lbs?????????? thats really heavy. Light weight wheels weigh about 15 lbs, and with tires they should weigh about 30. Not 50

No matter how you slice it (30 lb or 25 lb) they're still pigs.

18lb is the lightest I've been quoted for a 205/xx-17 tire:
