Thumbs up eCOTY

Picked up EVO issue 039 yesterday (it takes a while to reach us here in Aus!) and noticed the inclusion of the Cooper in their 12 car EVO Car Of The Year test (...which was won by a spaceship - the UKP 230,000 Pagani Zonda C12S - 0-60mph 3.7 secs!)

The summation of the MINI, which managed 7th, beating the new Merc SL500 & Clio 172, reads as follows:

"THE MINI WAS NECK AND NECK with the Clio until the votes came in from the Republic of Metcalfia. Harry just loves this car, placing it above Aston, Carrera and Evo as well as 172. 'The quality of the Mini just shines through,' he says. 'Hurl it at a mountain road and it'll always land butter-side up. It has one of the most incredible front-drive chassis in production.'

Roger Green says it reminds him of his old 205 Rallye. 'Not much power and a bit soft, but so chuckable and a lot of fun in a squeally, scrabbly sort of way.' Hayman says he never used the brakes and hasn't laughed so much in years.

Barker prefers the standard spec to our long-term test car, which has the big wheels and tyres and sports suspension, but Vivian reckons it sells the car's dynamic potential short. Most agree it needs more grip and everyone thinks it needs more power - and will handle it easily. In other words, the Cooper S can't come soon enough."

"The Cooper S can't come soon enough."... I'm taking a wild guess here that these sentiments will resonate favourably with members of this particular forum

If you haven't read the article in full, it's well worth tracking down EVO 039 for both some seriously fun motoring journalism, and further commentary on a nutter in a Mini Cooper chasing various high & mighty supercars all over the Italian Alps with considerable aplomb
