Cooper S in Los Angeles

This is from another forum. The guy went to see the S at a "gala event". Sounds promising, especially the comment about about aftermarket pulleys to boost the supercharger already being developed.

Interesting....Bigger pulleys=more power.

Any knowledgible supercharger people here care to comment on that one.

I have a pulley-less turbo-charged vehicle at present.

AFAIK a SMALLER pulley = more power.

I know a few people with plans to develop stuff for the 'S', but most are just that, 'plans'.

I know about the reason for the beagle, but I can't help it - I'm still picturing this guy:

Faulty Towers was on last night, on Sky TV (UK Gold). I think they might be repeating the series; quite appropriate considering the topic has been brought up.

I was a good as ever

Basil,
Regarding pulley changes. I have a supercharged GrandPrix which runs a max of about 7 pounds of boost. There is a pulley kit which lessens the power it takes to run other areas of the vehicle and boosts the blower p.s.i by about 4-5 pounds. More nice clean cool air sucked in = more go-go boost to the blower. Naturally this should be complimented by a K&N or similar air filter arrangement
No, I don't have the kit, my wife put her foot down. The K&N air filter did make a noticeable change though.
The costs are very reasonable. The tool is more than the pulleys. But, I do beleive that the vehicle warranty is then void.
I have a HyperTech hand-held computer that plugs into the diagnostics port of my Silverado pickup. You can do wonderful things with it! BUT, if I take it into the dealer for work I have to reset everything to factory specs. so it doesn't show up on their computers!
Click here for supercharger pulley kits info.

Question ECU programming

This bring a whole new meaning to the phrase "hacking your mini"

Are you saying you can reprogram the ECU?

If so, with the right leads & software, could this be done from any computer (laptop, palm, etc.)? If so, it could be revolutionary... Owners developing new ECU settings & sharing them on the web

Am I dreaming here? ....Or maybe this is already happening

Yes, it reprograms the ECU. I changed shift points, reset the redline on tach (revs), over-rode the top speed limiter, consequently added mucho torque, set it up for high octane fuel (the computer automatically changed spark, etc. for this...beyond my comprehension), made it recongnize a low-temp thermostat that I installed. Also added a K&N air filter and a cat-back tuned hi-po Simpson exhaust/muffler. The pickup now burns rubber from here to eternity (v-8 vortech) and I have blown off (from dead starts at stop lights) a Mustang Cobra, an M3, that new ugly Jag, and a few others. Of course I've lost quite a few too that were out of my league!
I assume this setup corresponds with the "superchips" I have seen referenced here on the forum. The main difference between the HyperTech unit and a chip is that you plug the HyperTech into the diagnostics port and choose what you want to override.
Could this be done from a lap-top with a self-written program? I suppose so, but probably not cost effectively or reliably.
Have you seen the movie "The Fast and the Furious"? They had computers in the rice burners and would key items as they were drag racing! All for show, but an interesting idea.

I just got back fro LA auto show. They had 3 S's. A few points. Has anyone else noticed they no longer have the boost gauge on the column. The fog lights they mention in the sports pack, are NOT spotlights, just foglights in the front valance. I like the stripes, I think they look good in the S.

What many people assumed was a boost gauge on the column - there doesn't seem to be a concensus that it really was a boost gauge - just showed up on one or two photos of some early S prototypes. It was never on any of the later prototypes or final Cooper S production photos. So no boost gauge in Cooper S production.

Perhaps it's just as well - my understanding is that a boost gauge for a supercharger, (unlike with a turbocharger), is as useful as a tachometer is for an automatic transmission - interesting to watch but of little real use.

Thanks... Love the pickup story!

Anyone got any views on doing this to a Mini?

Errmmm....on second thoughts..... If the BIGGER pulley were on the flywheel, that might make more sense.

Good grief, they're brilliant photo's.

AND they are posted directly as posts. I'm glad Paul has restricted the size of photo's here or I'd spend an hour opening each thread with my current Internet connection.

Good Work M.

Thats a RED S too, and no external shots......bugger!!
