Stereo Auxiliary Input (2003) - Where?

Hello,

I just got my new Mini Cooper S yesterday. Dream come true. Love the car. Can't wait to get past the break-in!

Electric Blue with White Top
Black Gravity Leather with Silver Interior
Sport Package (but with 16" Rims instead of 17")
Premium Package
Cold Weather Package
Harmon Kardon System
White Tail Lights (nicety with Electric Blue!)
Black Rubber Mats in front, back, and boot.

The confusion:

The price of the 2003 went up a little bit from 2002, and I was told by the dealer that part of this was due to the car stereo getting an upgrade to allow for auxiliary input (for mp3 players like an iPod, for instance). It's listed on the window sticker (which I got from the dealer when I took delivery, since it was a custom order), but I cannot find any mention of it in the stereo manual nor any evidence of it on the stereo.

Any clues as to what the deal is? It's advertised on the sticker, and part of the model year cost increase was supposed to be due to this enhancement. If it's not there, I'd say that Mini owes me a new stereo!

You ain't gonna like this, but here's the deal: the 2003's come auz input READY. That means the stereo can accept an aux input but it doesn't actually come with the port.

You have several options. The easiest is to buy the MINI aux input kit from your dealer ($40) and install it yourself, or have them install it (installation is roughly another $40). You'll have a 1/8" stereo headphone jack that you can then use for an MP3 player (or any other portable unit with compatible stereo output). The factory install puts the port in the glove box.

There are instructions on this site for building your own adapter, for much less than $40, but that requires more effort. Do a search under "aux port" and you should find lots of info.

I went with the dealer option when I bought my car 2 weeks ago, and it works great.

I agree with your sentiment though that the feature list is misleading... sorry there's no better news.

Good luck!

Corn On The Cob,
From what I heard the price dif between the '02 and '03
is that the '03s gets TWO alarm senders.

Battleship Grey Metallic/B/B MCS
with every option known to man/BMW
less CD changer and NO car problems.

That's odd. I was coming here to update with this info.

I just got off the phone with the service guy at my dealer and they said that there were some bugs with the 2003 aux input so they put it off til 2004 and when it gets released in Novemeber, they'll run a software upgrade and install the kit for free.

So was he giving me a song and dance? What's up with that?

I think your dealer is confused. The part is available now, cost is $40, install is roughly another $40.

I don't believe the radio is hooked up in any way to the ECU, so I can't imagine a software update could be needed (though I could be wrong there).

But hey... if he's willing to do it for free in November... sounds good to me!!
