Offline | Need your thoughts on this. Ok, I might be paranoid, I might not.... I went a a 1000mile road trip this weekend. Busch Gardens, lots of fun, blah blah blah. I get back home and decide it would be good to remove the 1,547,813 dead bugs off the car and the usual road grim. When I was cleaning the rear of the car I noticed that there was a slight black film on the rear bumper and boot hatch.... Im assuming it is some sort of coating that came from the exhaust fumes, as the exhaust tips had a bit of black funk on them as well. Is this normal, due to the S running so rich and the placement of the exhaust/the sheer back surface of the car? OR. Is something wrong with my baby and she is puking up some foul stuff from the tailpipes?? This is my first new car, It's a Mini S (you know how you feel about your S), and everytime I see something I get worried that something is amiss with my baby. What say you? Offline | I don't think it's anything to worry about. The rear hatch is renowned for getting dirty, due to the design of the car, and exhausts do kick out carbon. I found it depends on the RON of petrol you use to how dirty the exhaust gets. I use Optimax (100 RON I think) so I get very like carbon on the exhaust. But I would guess with lower RON you'd get more. What RON petrol you using? Global Moderator ![]() |

Offline | I run ONLY 93 octane. Which Im not sure how that compares on the RON scale, but it is the highest octane available to us without adding octane booster to the tank. Mr Whoa Everytime you mod a Mini a VW cries. *WARNING! Looking at my gallery has been known to cause brain damage* |

Offline | Yep on Optimax (98RON) here too. The exhausts get very sooty, very quickly. Just normal I believe. Just cleaned the car, but I'll post a picture next time. |

Offline | I've never heard where the octane rating of gas makes any difference on the amount of soot produced. -Jim 2003 MCS All Black 1992 NSX Red/Blk 5 spd #0330 1974 Vette 454 4 spd Wht/Blk 1976 Honda Accord 5 spd, 3 door Blue/Blue |

Offline | Not sure it's related to octane rating either, I use 95 all the time (yes I know I should be using Optimax) and get hardly any black deposits around the exhaust (and I don't wash them that often. Doesn't it have something to do with the air intake as well? I know when I run my old mini without a filter it gets very dirty very quickly - put the filter back on and it is much less pronounced. I might be wrong though. |

Offline | I figured it was just soot from the car running so damn rich. I would be willing to wager that people running a 15% pulley and a remapped ECU dont get as much soot. Mr Whoa Everytime you mod a Mini a VW cries. *WARNING! Looking at my gallery has been known to cause brain damage* |
