A bit off topic but I've now decided what I'm going to get if my new MCS doesn't live up to my expectations...

After hours of reading car mags and checking out the prices I will get a Saab 9-3 2.0T Aero £22,895 list.
I have test driven the new 9-3 series and they are very good

Nothing close to the MINI, but close enough to a BMW but far less common. I like to think the as the "thinking mans" car. Either that or a dressed up Vauxhaul Vectra
