Offline | Hot weather and the Cooper S ! I do believe this has been covered before but here goes anyway. I had the pleasure of using our Cooper S today and as you can imagine with this glorious hot weather we've been getting having the climate blasting was a necessity ,but what with the high temperatures and using the climate I did'nt realise how much power the two combined sapps from the engine and makes its dangerous when pulling out of a junction as you have to use twice as much throttle than normal has anyone else had these problems when driving the S in hot conditions. dinger. ![]() |

Offline | dinger - you hit the nail on the head! I daren't pull out of a junction with the air con fan on - incidentally, has anyone noticed a helluva din coming from, seems like the engine, kinda harsh noise, which has suddenly appeared on mine in this very hot weather, when the fan's on? When the fan is switched off, there's a second's gap before the noise disappears. "I get by with a little help from my friends" |

| MINI2 Senior | There have been at least a couple threads on how the aircon saps power from the engine. I certainly have noticed it. It does take a little adjusting in driving style. If I need to launch into traffic at a rapid rate, I switch off both the aircon and DSC to prevent stumble and power drain. Regards, Dave Gotten anything useful from MINI2? How about giving a little something back? '03 MCS BRG/W Anthracite Pkg 1,2,3 |

Offline | Hi, Sammy. The MCS (Mini Cooper S) is indeed a very cool car. It is lots of fun to drive because of its tight steering and power. For gas mileage, I've gotten 36 highway, 26 in the city. 2nd "Go not to the elves for counsel for they will say both no and yes." JRR Tolkien |

Offline | Background of owning several forced induction cars. This is normal during the summer time. You guys ever thought of adding a intercooler sprayer? Just sprays water mist onto the intercooler to drop the temps of the charged air. These are found on the new evo in the usa and sti wrx and they can be purchased online for around 125 dollars usa. Seems to helped me in the past... Paul Ward Louisville, KY USA ~~I R A N00b!~~ |

Offline | I was amazed how much power the heat sapped. ![]() I had the Air Con on full blast as well which didn't help. The rain managed to cool things down though. ![]() Global Moderator ![]() |

Offline | Ah yes, summer heat. Here in Texas it's been as scorching hot as southern England lately (how often am I going to get at chance to say that! ) and yes, the combination of high ambient temperatures and mandatory a/c usage does indeed slow the Cooper S down. But each fall when things start cooling off in November (here anyway) it suddenly feels like the car has developed an extra 20 hp. ![]() + 2002 MINI Cooper S - Dark Silver / White roof, Sport, Premium, Lapis blue leather + 1965 Mini Traveller - Tartan Red / White roof, 1275, Cooper S discs, fully restored/renewed |

Offline | I ALWAYS turn my aircon off before starting off from a standstill now...it's pretty sad/stupid that it's practically a neccessity. I had a really nasty surprise a week or two ago when trying to start on a hill and now I just don't risk it anymore. |

| MINI2 Regular | Did anyone ask their local dealer about the noise of the Air conditioning? Just recently noticed the air con being really noisy in all this hot weather... My Cooper has gone in to have the CD player, and one of the H/K Speakers replaced, so Ive asked them to look at the air con at the same time... The noise I get is kind of like a different tone to the engine and as the RPM's go up, so do both the pitch of the noise of the engine, and the pitch of the noise of the air con... Hopefully its nothing... I used to have a Honda Civic 1.6SE as a company car... Didnt care about that whatsoever, didnt run it in at all etc etc, so the engine was mullered... I gave that back recently with 50,000 miles on the clock and the air con in that didnt make as much noise as the Cooper does... Offline | Yep, hot weather takes it out of any car. Down here in Oz the heat does take it out of the MCS a lot with or with out the air con. I am looking at water sprayer or a water to air intercooler to get some of the power back. Just a side note of interest during hot weather testing in Death Valley the CVT MINI was reported to have up to a 50 % drop in torque due to the heat. |

Offline | Put your back seats down - cheap way of getting more noise from the exhaust ![]() I've not noticed the aircon sapping the power, I rarely turn it off at all. The heat does suck the life out of the supercharged engine though; the intercooler can't do a good job if the ambient air is 38C! The noise some of you have heard is the variable stroke compressor used to pressurise / pump the refrigerant around the a/c system. It works harder for you when the temp is up and the fan speed is high. |

Offline | Here in Phoenix (116 on Sunday) the AC does sap power, requiring even higher revs. as routine. It's not so bad that it ****es me off and I do enjoy turning off the AC and driving with everything open. Come on Fall! At Summers start I did notice that the AC seemed exceptionally noisy, but that disapeared and now it's just noisy! This car requires max AC at all times in Phoenix summer where the other cars we've owned require us to turn the AC down after initial cooling.. Mike |
