Offline | Warm up and cool down question.....sorry for the newb question, I've searched here... and cannot find my answer. Anyway, I just got my S 3 days ago and have noticed there is no oil temperature gauge. My other car is a twin-turbo (Audi S4) and I am religious about letting the oil get to temp before "hitting" it hard..... The question is, how do I know when the car is hot enough to push it hard? The coolant temp really is not an indicator of oil temps. My Audi coolant temp is in the middle long before my oil temp needle even moves at all.....I don't really want to break the car early in it's life! I know turbos and superchargers are different, it just seems that warming up is a good idea...the manual says nothing other than making sure the coolant temp is not in the cold range - is this correct? Thanks in advance. Jason |

Offline | Welcome to MINI2 ![]() I can't really help you here as I don't know ![]() I don't really "boot" it until the gearbox has warmed up. This you can distinctly feel is more notchy when cold. Whether this is a good indicator to engine oil is a different matter though ![]() MINI, RX8 and MX5 - Done those............. It's now TTime ![]() ![]() Unofficial MINI2.com bean counter |

Offline | If you check the MiniUSA website (under build your own), you'll find that you can purchase auxilliary gauges for $250. It includes an oil temperature gauge. I am not sure how much would be the install by the dealer, or how difficult it is to do a diy. Hope this helps. |

| Now With More Cowbell | This is not based upon any hard evidence, but I observe a 5-minute minimum of gentle driving before driving a car with any gusto. In fact, I won't even get on a highway onramp until that threshold has passed. That's a pretty blunt too to go by, obviously. When it's -20C in February the oil will take much longer to get up to temp than a day like today when it crested in the 31C range. In the case of extreme cold temps, I wait 'til the water temp gauge has been at the middle reading for at least a couple of additional minutes. -CW Global Moderator |
