Dunlops or Pirellis

I have got a MCS DS/B with 17" wheels and pirellis I was just wondering how they decide which make to put on the car?

Does anyone know which are better for wear?

I've got 17" as well but have dunlop on it. I think the Pirellis will be better than the dunlops

I think they're both kack, get rid of them and get some proper tyres like Toyo Proxes, Bridgestone S03s or Pirelli PZero Neros.

Oh and a can o'fix-a-flat and a 12V compressor.

Agree with Big, the runflats are fine for doing 60 etc, but change either brand if you want decent rubber on your 17"s. I have changed my Euphori@s to PZero asimetricos and they are far better.

215/40R17 ZR Toyo Proxes T1S from http://www.blackcircles.com are £85 a corner at the moment. Or you can get non-runflat Bridgestone S03 @ 205/45R17 ZR for £106 a corner (if you want to have exactly the same size tyre as OEM). Same size runflat replacements from that website cost £131 for the Pirellis and £160 for the Dunlops.

Just to put that into perspective, if I was to buy 2 Dunlop runflats to replace my fronts only it would cost me £328 including shipping. I could buy 4 Toyos for £347 including shipping....

BM wanted £390 for two Euphori@s, Micheldever Tyres wanted £245 for them, the Asimetricos were £215 (for 2).

I agree that run-flats are not the worlds best tires (tyres) but I must confess that I find that my Dunlops 17" are not as bad a s people like to say. I have done a couple of track days and with stock suspension and proper tire pressures it handles pretty well in the dry and good in the rain. this means that they were predictable and signalled when they were getting overwhelmed so I could get out of it a little and I never had to 'take it easy' because of lack of grip. Even my instructors were non-critical about them so it wasn't just me geriactric driving style

If you are racing (any kind) better rubber is always better but i would not throw away the Dunlops but will replace them with something better when they wear out.

Just been quoted £245.66 for two Pilot Sports and £215.11 for two Pirelli P-Zeros. Both 205/45R17. Both from Micheldever.

Good prices. Which to go for?

Why is there so little (yes I've searched) objective information on tyre sizes, brands and 'stuff' out there for our little cars?

And while we're on the topic...
As I've worn out the fronts first, is there any advantage or problem in putting hte new rubber on the rear and putting the old runflats on the front?
Advantage as I see it is that I'll get rid of the runflats faster on the front!! :-)

Any advice most welcome!

Cheers,
Paul.

Out of the two the Dunlops get my vote. I had them on my old S and preferred them to the Pirellis on my current car.

It seems its luck of the draw to which one you get.

I've just rotated my front wheels to the back so all the tyres need replacing at the same time. Not very cheap in the short term, but means you get the same type all round (i.e. non runflats with runflats)

I'm going to go for Bridgestone S-03's, I had S-02's on my Golf VR6 and they were amazing, and lasted a fair amount of time too!

A friend of mine had Pirelli P-Zero Rosso's on his BMW 325 they were good, also read somewhere that they were very good.

I've used Goodyear Eagle F1's too, they're good aswell. Also sportscar people I know rate Toyo Proxes.

Choices choices!!

My MCS came with the Pirelli runflats, and I thought they were awful. The car tracked road pitches badly, and didn't ride well in general. There were a lot of complaints floating around about them in general. I hit a bad pothole and damaged two of them, which gave me an excuse to get rid of them. I got some Kumho Ecsta's (non-runflat) and I like them much better.

I've heard good things about the Dunlop runflats, though.

get the euphori@s if you want to keep runflat technology on your car.. the flank is much ( and I mean MUCH) weaker on the dunlops and I curse the day when I wanted to "try out" the dunlops.. still have em on my everyday-rims....

but hey.. they wear less than the pirellis... the pirellis were on 0 mm profile after 14.000 km's

It doesn't affect it at all, the runflat indicator works via the ABS sensors. When the tyres are changed, re-inflated, etc. just press the little button down below the hand-brake as instructed in the owner's manual.
