United-Kingdom Optimum Power

Evening all,

I've asked this question already on the newsgroup alt.autos.new-mini, but I'll ask it here (first time I've posted here!) as well,

If the max power of 163 BHP is at 4500rpm, is there any point in taking the revs past it?

I found it bloody hard today keeping pace with a Civic TYPE R, as he can let his go to 8000rpm and beyond and infact a greater power boost at 8000 rpm.

Any tips ????

Matt.

The maximum horsepower of the MCS is actually at 6000 rpm

4500 RPM is the torque peak, so that means in a given gear, you will accelerate fastest at the torque peak. However, you accelerate faster in any given gear (until almost redline) than the next gear up, like from first to second. Here is a good article that explains everything.

Also, if you shift earlier than redline, it puts you lower in the RPM band for the next gear. Lower in the RPM band means less power.

Also, note that the torque curve for the MCS is not all that peaky. It's pretty
flat from 3000 to 5500, and doesn't plunge until after 6500; for the MC,
from 2500 to 6000 is fairly flat except for the dip centered on 3500.
