Silver Black 2006 Cooper S Rumor Mill

Hello all,

I'm an avid car and BMW enthusiast, and I've been dead-set on getting a Mini Cooper S for a couple of months now once it was deemed financially viable. At first I was going to wait for the 2005 model, due to the slight increase in power and added (albeit minimal) interior storage room. However, I ran across some rumored information regarding the 2006 model and it's causing me to wonder whether I should wait until next summer to buy my baby. Can anyone validate this? Here's what I heard:

"The story goes that the 2006 Mini will get new engines to replace the current 1.6-litre fours built with Chrysler in South America. The new engines, which will be built in the United Kingdom, include a more powerful 1.6-litre engine and a 2.0-litre turbocharged four in the Cooper S. Power and torque will be up around 15 percent on current outputs."

I think I could wait a year for that! But is it true?

Ah but then as you are waiting for your 2006 MINI the rumour mill for the 2007 car
will be talking about the new lightweight suspension, seats that massage you and
paint that glows in the dark etc etc

Some people are like a Slinky ........ not really good for anything, but you still can't help
but smile when you shove them down the stairs

I think the 2006 MINI coming out in 2005 is an american thing. A long time ago each
manufacturer wanted to release their year XXXX models before their rivals and each
year the new models were released earlier and earlier until they were all being released
6 months before year XXXX. Would any americans care to chime in on whether this is
still true? Does the 2005 GM Blob come out on the 1st of July 2004? I think in europe
the manufacturers fight shy of this so they don't have to do changes for changes sake
each year at the same time so you'll see changes to the MINI spread over the year.

US models indicate the "model year" in the 10th digit of the VIN.

I'm not sure this is the case in Euro VINs:

Steve, yes, that's very true here in the US: this July 1st, for example, will mark the first date after which if you order a Mini, you'll be receiving the 2005 model.

It also seems from the references Paul has made (many thanks, Paul) that the new engines will not be showing up in the S until the 2007 model year. While I consider myself relatively patient, two years is a little much to wait... I might just have to be impulsive and order my MCS in January. I'm not particularly fond of that ugly new bulge in the bonnet of the Prince-driven prototype, either. Here's an alleged photo:

That's a real photo, but they're changing the fitment as they go along. They can now get the new engines under the current Cooper S bonnet with a small extra gap. So I've heard.

to qualify, it's an American market thing. In addition to US carmakers, Japanese (Nissan esp) & German (VW esp) mfgrs. in recent years have introduced next year's model as early as Feb...e.g. in Feb '04 the '05 model is announced & delivered....it's almost as bad as going to the movies and seeing trailers for a movie coming out in the Spring of '05...geesh!

How does it work in the US?
My father bought his 2005 Ford Escape in April 2004. Didn't even need to pre-order.
We're almost at a full year ahead of time. Go figure.
